Hi, I'm new to the Lizardmen, and actually Warhammer Fantasy in general, and I'm trying to decide how many cold one riders to get. Can there be too many cold one riders? Thanks.
I have 16 and haven't used more than 5. EVER. There are just too many good stuff in the special section, and the SC are just to expencive. Though I have set ut an army list, starring Ancient Scar-Leader Kroq Gar due to his special rule of having at least one unit of SC in your army. think about it. 210 pts for 5 SC full command... against 174 pts for 3 Krox.... I vote for the Kroxis
I suppose it would depend largely on what army you are playing against and also your own style. Although, I would probably not use a huge force of SC, because like Aparach said, they are friggin' expensive.
I personally hate Cold Ones. Stupidity is not worth it. Expecially when you are about to charge... I use Ogres instead
i hope they make the Horned Ones fast cavalry unit that is being rumored about. I think it would be a lot better.
Also, if they come at a lower cost I would consider them as a alternative for my saurus wariors. Espessialy when faceing chaos warriors. they have alot of hitting power with spear on the charge... Looking forward to february
I usually only take a single unit, I prefer 6, or 5 and a hero on a cold one. If I field them I never leave them without the haunci totem.
That sounds like a good combo, given their stupidity.. I plan on giving my Cavalry unit a second chance in a 3000 pts match next weekend against Warriors of Chaos. Think I go for 5 without command pluss Scar vet... That gives me a Hero with 1+ armor save, 5+Ward Save and 4 S6 attacks. I know I will be heavily outnumbered against those exhalted champions, but with a bit of luck I can manuvre around him and taking out victory points elsewere
If you do go that route, I would still spend the points on a musician. A few extra poits for the possible extra +1 for combat resolution is usually a safe bet. Plus, the Huanchi Banner is a usual (as was pointed out by Craken) trick to ensure a nice little no reaction charge into an enemy. Plus, you'll need as much of a combat res bonus as you can muster for a line of cavalry, so I'd consider the banner bearer anyway, huanchi totem or not. I Would skip the Champion though. His extra attack is usually not worth the points you'll be dumping into him. But since you're adding a Scar Vet to take the challenges, it won't be quite as bad as if you go champ only and get challenged on the charge by one of those Chaos Knights.
Do you folks here honestly consider Cold Ones to not be worth it, because of their Stupidity? I've used mine in every army list I've played; I love them. LD8 with Cold Blooded means you almost never fail.
I personally do not, I love the cold ones also, I've only ever once failed a stupidity test, the L8 with 3 dice usually means tehy don't fail.
Well, other then the stupidity, you got 3+ armor save: not really good for heavy cavalry; they cost just 5 pts less than a chaos knight.. I don't exlude them, as I will try them again next weekend, but just saying they'r a bit costy. Think of it, 3 kroxis(174 pts) or 5 cold ones without command(175 pts). Though I see usage of them as well, I just usually spend thouse points elsewere... But to answare you'r originale question; you can always spend a lot of points on a single unit, but then you'r likely to suffer from other weeknesses in lack of other types of troops.
Too expensive for what you get. Kroxigors I think are so much better. Let's see. Movement 7 not caused by barding. Stupidity only str 4 3+ armor save That makes them not fast enough with a weak armorsave and low strength that will fail stupidity like 15% of the time. On wendesday I had 1 leadbelcher shoot at my opponents SC and wounded 4 times. That dropped his armor save to 5+ and he failed 3 of them. Then I got my gnoblar trappers in range. 18 shots, 2 wounds 1 failed armor save. They're just too easy to kill. Now I charged 3 ironguts into his kroxigors who held the first round of combat and beat me the 2nd round and chased me down. Kroxigors are so good... What they need is to either move 8 or give +2 to the rider's armorsave. Or give them a lance option. However if rumors are right and there will be an army wide rule of being able to move through trees without penatly, then I believe I will start taking these.
I think about 5 in a unit, the cold one cavalry is a very hard hitting unit but they are really expensive. But with this unit in an enemy flank you wont have to worry to lose
