I've never been much of a painter. I don't enjoy it terribly much, and while I like what I can turn out it takes me ages to to models (average about 15 hours for a standard trooper).

When a friend picked up a new Skaven army I decided to give it a go, and ended up with Lizardmen. Love the Aztec theme, and the colors are good. I've been working at getting decent results, but faster, and not being quite so obsessive - sharp layers instead of smooth blending, varying primer colors to simplify base coats, etc.

And now I've REALLY thrown myself into the fire. Two weeks ago I decided to attend Capital City Carnage on the 1st of May. It's a 2250 tournament, my list has 95 or so models, and at the time I had... 10... painted.

I've finished off the unit of Cold One Cavalry since then, which makes the list:

    - Slann
    - Saurus Battle Standard Bearer
    - Skink Chief
    - Engine of the Gods
    - 36 Saurus
    - 16 Temple Guard
    - 3 Terradons
    - Salamander and Handlers
    - 10 Skink Skirmishers
    - 10 Skink Skirmishers (DONE)
    - 5 Cold One Cavalry (DONE)

Overall theme for the army is traditional blue skin, with red scales to tie everything together - regardless of the base colors for the creature, the red scales will be there.

The saurus are primed and on the table... More to come, but in the mean time, pics of the completed:

    Skink Skirmishers:

Cold One Cavalry: I changed up the bases on these guys, not something I normally do, to take advantage of the larger base area to work with. I was going for a swamp/wet mud look, with some puddles of water. Unfortunately the gloss made the mud look nice and wet, but canceled out the water puddles.

I also glossed the spear blades, with a bit of hard, bright highlighting to get an obsidian effect. I'm pretty pleased with it.

I like the look of them quite a bit! Don't obsess too much about the painting since you can still play regardless of whether they are painted or not. I've been helping my WoC friend out with his list for CCC recently. I have a group of friends going who keep pestering me to go too but alas, I am cheap. Good luck in the tourney and again, I like your paint jobs! If you wanted just a bit more depth to them you could always use one of the Games Workshop washes. I use Devlan Mud on all of my models and I think it looks fantastic to mellow out the brightness of the different colors and even to help blend them some.

I do use the washes - the cavalry riders are based with Mordian Blue and Mechrite Red, and the whole model is given a heavy wash of Asurmen Blue before drybrushing to highlight. I don't tend to go for much of the extreme highlighting that's popular with GW models, preferring more subtle shading. The photos might also be washing it out a bit - these were my first photos with my new diffuser box, still fiddling with the brightness especially.

I know CCC doesn't require fully painted, but I'm taking it as a solid challenge. The fact that I'm looking at starting a Tomb Kings army if the new book hits in May as anticipated adds a bit of motivation, too ;)

    Thanks for the kind words!
