8th Ed. Casting in Combat

I just read through the 8th ed magic section and I don't think its says wizards have to be out of combat to cast?
I know the slann has a special rule to cast from the second, but can a priest cast if his unit of skinks is in combat but hes hanging off the side?
Also I'm pretty sure the priest can cast from the EotG is that cause of a special rule? (don't have the army book infront of me)

I believe they can cast non line of sight spells..... not sure though

They cannot cast magic missiles while in combat. Not sure about direct damange. They can cast hexes and buffs though.

The Slann can't cast magic missles into combat, but while his unit is in combat he can cast at an unengaged unit, with or without the skinks line of sight.

It is worth noting that the slaan can only do that if he has no enemies in base contact.

So a skink priest could cast while his unit is in combat as long as he isn't in BtB

no just the slann... he has a special rule...
but some buff spells are allowed in close combat...
there is a chart in the magic section of the BRB.

If the unit is in combat, he can cast buffs/debuffs anywhere around him.
He can cast Direct Damage but only at the unit his unit is fighting.
No magic missiles, no vortex spells.

Slann:
Can cast Buffs/debuffs all around him.
Can cast Direct Damage spells but only at the unit he is in combat with
Can cast Magic Missiles if he is not in direct contact with an enemy model (special rule)
No Vortex spells.

Slann special rule states he can cast magic missiles, doesn't say anything else. I think this is 7th ed wording, but it's the wording. (pg 43, LM book)

Wrong.
Direct damage spells cannot target units in CC, regardless of weither or not the wizard is fighting them.
Everything else is correct.

And where does it say that you can't cast Vortex spells into combat? They're not usually targeted, so the rule "Wizards cannot target spells at units engaged in close combat" doesn't apply.

Oh yea Zed is right the FAQ even says you can throw vortexes on friendlys.

Yeah, people can still cast vortexes when in close combat. Makes purple sun rather nasty if used correctly.

If I where A Slann I would take the default spell over the purple sun,
that spell has a greater potential of killing our troops that anyone ealses.

Make the slann BSB with banner of discipline for LD10 on the roll for the signature spell.

I think the spell says use "unmodified leadership." So no leadership 10 sorry. But still a good spell with bane head. Also the spell does well against monsters too, no bane for those however.

Just thought of something... If I cast the signature death spell on something with no leadership, for example, the skaven plague furnace or bell, they get 0 plus D6 and I get 9 plus D6, just a thought. The spell does say, unmodified leadership, so no inspiring presence, no strength in numbers, or any of the other leadership modifying stuff out there. mmmm... very interesting.

Would the same spell work against a doom wheel or Abomination?

helipilot: it works and works well thought of that when playing against a 4k skaven army in the finals for our tourny a couple months back. the bell/furnace have MR 2 though (and 4+ ward for the bell), so it wont be necessarily an auto-kill, though against the furnace i'd be surprised if it was standing if you got it off.
and yes the spell works against the doomwheel and abomination. what makes it special against the bell/furnace is they count as a mount (i.e. separate model per their rulebook) so they can be targeted separate from the grey seer/priest with that spell. with the doomwheel, at least with my thinking, everything works together so you'd be going against the highest leadership (same as for warmachines, monster & handlers, etc). i view it as "can i shoot at it separatley? can i attack it separately in h2h? can it function on its own?". with the bell/furnace you can and it does (random location for shooting and dealers choice for h2h)
