Figured we should try this. It start from Monday the 20th and until the following Sunday. So 7 days. If this becomes a thing we can do it every week. So, what is this? A challenge of course Every week we have a new challenge which means that we'll try something different when we play. We do this to try out stuff we wouldn't normally, learn from it or just have fun. I figure that during the week we decides what next challenge will be and I'll update the OP. So first challenge is.. Roll with only the slann and no other characters. The slann is unique enough to be able to be the general AND the BSB. By doing this we doesn't rely on our cowboys and it saves us points to use for other things. There is no point limit, just only the slann, so if you want to give him a scroll, BSB, and 4 disciplines go ahead. So what next? For those of you who are still with me, post your army list and after your game write how it went, not necessarily a huge battle report, but just what your experience with the challenge was. Thoughts?
Re: challenge of the week! im a big fan of this idea! collective experiments usually bears tastier fruit than when you do things your way only. im not able to participate this on this week as I have my final examination coming up, but I will sure keep an eye out for this thread will you take charge of it? and would it be to you one should post possible idea challenges?
Re: challenge of the week! Next time I'm considering no templeguards. I personally rely a lot on them (dat S5 armour piercing horde), but otherwise yes I don't mind taking care of this. Anyway nah just post it in the thread and we'll try and agree. Otherwise I'll just take whatever I want and figure it out along the way. I'll also be try and play a game, but it depends on exams so we'll see.
Re: challenge of the week! Really fun idea! I find one week a bit tight for me as I don't get to play that often right now anyways. When you update the post can you keep the previous challenges in a quote box?
Re: challenge of the week! Perhaps make it a Challenge of the Month? Dunno about you guys, but sometimes I have to schedule games a couple weeks out. Love the idea though! We could do... No Special... No Rare... No Lords... No Heroes... No Lords/Heroes... No Upgrades... No Magic Items... No Skinks... No Saurus... The options are endless!! Haha.
Re: challenge of the week! This is interesting, though I won't be participating a "no skinks of any kind" challenge. They're too big a crutch for me (and models are a concern). Have you checked out Bobo's battle report on the warhammer forum? He wrote up a tournament report where he used dark elves with his "five iron rules": THOU SHALT NOT TAKE MAGIC ITEMS THOU SHALT NOT TAKE MINIMUM UNIT SIZES THOU SHALT NOT DUPLICATE UNITS THOU SHALT NOT TAKE "USUAL" SET UPS THOU SHALT GAMBLE. think the dark elves can do it better than us, but still a good challenge I think. Will try solo slann tomorrow. Though it's a club game so will be taking a non-optimised list.
Re: challenge of the week! Right, tried my solo Slann. Here's some notes, though not a full batrep. The game: triumph and treachery. I get that this skews "results", but I'm sure some things will be transferrable to normal games. The list: Slann - BSB, Channeling Staff, Wandering Deliberations, Harmonic Convergence, Soul Of Stone, Becalming Cogitations. 25 Saurus Warriors - Standard, Musician, Hand Weapons 10 Skink Skirmishers - Javelin and Shield 10 Skink Skirmishers - Javelin and Shield 10 Skink Skirmishers - Javelin and Shield 30 Temple Guard - Full Command, Razor Standard Bastiladon - Solar Engine Bastiladon - Solar Engine Ancient Stegadon - Sharpened Horns I was boxed in between high elves and nurgle daemons. This meant that I was able to get in spell range of most targets. This would not have been the case in a normal game, and deployment would have had a larger factor. Also, it meant pushing forwards fairly aggressively with the temple guard to get into range, which in a serious game could have caused problems. For this reason it also mean I had to put the slann in he temple guard from the get-go, as he needed the protection in case of charges from, well, anything. This obviously increased the risk of blowing holes in the temple guard. Note on the temple guard - with the soul of stone you can never suffer premature detonation (giggity) if you don't want to, and bumping it up to an 8-9 saves the guard and you don't have to worry about blowing your skinks up. Felt that wandering deliberations was the best call here. Death is not versatile enough for a single caster, and light can't draw a scroll early enough. That said, the bastiladons were great, adding to the ranged damage. There was also a turn when he slann could not cast due to a card, and the bastiladons took the phase rather than it going to waste. This was important once the slann was in combat, as he couldn't chuck out his magic missiles. So, it can be done, and it can work. I didn't miss the extra Iceshard blizzard or the scroll, but to be fair it wasn't a normal game with optimised lists. The thing I missed most about the Priest was the Vassal. I don't think the use of that can be overstated for protecting the slann and increasing his utility, especially if he ends up in a combat with temple guard.
Re: challenge of the week! I had forgotten this, but i too have a t&t game tomorrow, i'll have to do with a solo slann at 1500. it'll be great!
Re: challenge of the week! I like the idea, but I'd go AT LEAST a month. Maybe a challenge every two months or once per season would be better. I only get about one WHF game in per month on average. It would be awesome if I could play a game a week. Even then I wouldn't want to do the challenge EVERY week because once in a while I'd want to try out a concept not based on a challenge.
Re: challenge of the month! - february = only slann as chara Just updated the thread title according to the responses. Hope that we can get this going. Personally I've been busy with exam and internship, but I got something like 3 games this weekend so I'll try it out. Should be interesting against WoC.
