8th Ed. Chamo Skinks can make you go second

Our gaming group had some rule discussions and decided that if you deploy scouts that counts as your last deployment and your opponent gets the +1 to roll whos going first.

This comes up because I'm contemplating a list with a carnosaur and a EOTG making going first pretty imporant to get the ward up and not get cannonned first turn.

Since I can only afford 6 chamo skinks perhaps its better to sack them to retain the chance at the +1 and have a worse chance at warmachine sniping?

Btw my list would have 6 drops (at 2000point) is that on the low side or am I going to be outdeployed anyways?

But, Scouts don't count for deployment rolls..?
I supose you could use our item that gives you +1 for deployment...

I thought the same but Pg 142 of the BRB says "Where a battle calls upon you to alternate deployment of units roll off to see who sets up first and then take it in turns to deploy a single unit..... but the player that finished his deploying his army first is allowed a +1 to his dice roll."

The scouts rule on pg 79 says "Scouts are set up after all other non-scout units from both armies have been deployed" so it doesn't mention deployment is done prior to scouts and should be exempt from above

Apparently this was a specfic change in language from 7th so was intentional. (Haven't read on that)


ie maybe 6 chamo skinks isn't worth giving up the +1?
N810-how many drops does a standard army have at 2000pts you'd guess?

Hello!

I'm not sure how it actually is, but at least we in our game group have always played it so that the one who deploys his or her normal units first gets the +1, scouts and others notwithstanding. For the amount of units, I think it can vary greatly from army to other and even inside the same army, since many forces can utilize the Multiple Small Units tactic. I'd say, from my experience, that 6 is about average or maybe slightly below it.

In our group, we play deployement over when the Heroes and Lords are deployed. Scouts are outside normal deployement. I have even made it a point to bring this up in several instances, and everyone that I talk to agree with that stance. Also, I am almost the only one that ever uses scouts.

There are two better arguments than WEs need all the help they can get. There are two contradictions.

Contradiction 1 Page 79

"Scouts are set up after all other non-Scout units from both armies have been deployed. They can be set up either in their controlling palyer's deployment zone, or anywhere on eh the battlefield more than 12" from the enemy." This implies they are "set up" not "deployed." Unfortunately it uses the "d" word next sentence.

Contradiction 2 Page 142

"All characters must be deployed last." Scouts cannot be deployed after non scouts and have characters deployed last simulataneously.

Basically there is room to move either direction, deployment is offiically over after characters are deployed or deployment is over when the last unit is down (which may be a scout or a character). I don't believe anyone is capable of making a non-biased judgement call on this one. It's best to establish it ahead of time regardless.
