I'm sure this has been covered before but looking at the Stegadon he isn't that killy and I want him to be able to hold up a flank by himself. Now a Skink chief with the warspear makes strength 6 attacks from the skink (due to lance) and 2D6 impact hits for just into triple figure points. Anyone who runs the skink does he really make a triple figure points worth of difference to the stabby-ness of your stegadon? If yes then what would you drop from this list to make room for it? i find the stegs most useful for holding people up (anything S4 or less has a hell of a time shifting him ,especially if he's in BSB range), and against infantry will cause plenty of damage anyway. i could see it being worth it if you come up against lots of non-infantry with your stegadon where you're still getting the charge on them. to me this is the critical point, if he doesnt charge, it's a lot of points pretty much wasted.
well, in 7th ed, he would make his points back as the would charge a unit and kill enough so they couldn't strike back. Then overrun and repeat
Also worth noting that impact wits go before all other attacks even ASF. and just like our other monster units and cav, a flank attack is allways more sucessfull because it greatly reduces the attacks back. Ps. don't forget about their monsterous stomp attack either.
Your current list is not legal. As you don't have enough points invested in core troops. You need 500pts and you are only around 450 if my math is correct. Time of Madness
I personally like the idea of one on an Engine of the Gods Ancient Steggy. Charge the enemy. Blast them in the magic phase. 2D6 impact hits... That would be absolutely lethal against things like elves where they always strike first.
The problem comes from the fact that when you add a character he can be challenged no matter what. A single unit champion can hold up all the damage you just did and since you no longer break ranks they test on stubborn leadership. After the charge the steggy really isn't as scary. I still run a steg, but he's an ancient and all I expect him to do is to eat up shots that would otherwise be directed at my infantry and get the occasion combo charge in. Anything beyond that I consider a bonus.
But if you have it without a character... And also, I actually found that very useful against dwarfs. Killing the champion without a scratch gives the rest of my army (usually the Saurus) time to catch up. Secondly, if you charge the army general or the battle standard bearer it's a win-win situation.
And a champion cant use "make way" right? So if you charge a unit and make sure your not in base contact with him (i.e. in the side rear) he cant challenge. I am not at all sure on this so I am hoping that someone who knows can tell me if Im wrong.
as i understand it you can challenge anyone in another unit as long as you unit is in base contact. Also something mentioned above you can't give an ancient steg with EOTG the war spear, as i understand it, only a skink preist can take EOTG and only a skink chief can take the warpear, just to save any confusion.
The units have to be in contact, not the characters. It's one of the more annoying changes in 8th. (BRB P. 102 under "Accepting Challenges".) Edit: Skink chiefs can take ancients as a mount.
Well, on the positive side to the challenge, You are doing 2d6+1 impact hits on the charge to the whole unit as impact hits are resolved before a challenge takes place... Now, since it is counted as a Monster Mount the whole thing would fight the one champion: Chief, Crew, AND monster?? I think that should be FAQ'd as that just wouldn't even make sense... The rampaging Stegadon smashes through a small forest as it bears down upon its foe. Bellowing a ferocious roar, it slams into the terrorized halberdiers, crushing a handful beneath its mighty feet. Then it sits there and does nothing until the bored chief on its back can kill a champion... I can't think of a way to make that work with fluff... With Chariots it doesn't even make sense.. Much less with a Stegadon.. But remember, you don't want to be charging your Stegadon into units by itself anyways as the impact hits would be a HUGE plus in a fight that is already happening. If you have a unit of Saurus engaged then you can simply accept the challenge with your Saurus unit champion... Stegadons work best as co-chargers, not solo ones.. And with a chief on his back, you are talking an average 8 impact hits at Strength 5 (6 if its an Ancient) + 3 Strength 6 Attacks from the Chief (Lance gives +2 Str on charge) + 4 Str 5 attacks (3 Str 6 if Ancient) + d6 extra Str 5 (or 6) attacks from Thunder Stomp... Thats a whole lotta high Strengthness going around into a flank... An average of about 18 and 3d6+1 hit automatically... And only a measly 5 or 6 possible attacks back from normal infantry... If you charge that into someones flank with a unit of Saurus already engaging it, unless the Dice Gods are COMPLETELY against you, I see that fight going HEAVILY in your favor It better though, you just around 400 points into a Mighty Hammer unit
"If a competitor is riding a mount, then that mount (including the crew of a chariot if the character is riding one) must direct its attacks against either the other competitor or that competitor's mount...) p103. Thats the rule for chariots, but I see no specific mention to a Stegadon's crew I would just assume it is the same as a chariot for friendly gaming. Was the Stegadon in challenges FAQ'ed somewhere? It would be nice if the crew could keep on attacking the rest of the unit... Edit: Well, there was an FAQ on the rule book stating that models not in a challenge cannot direct an attack towards the mount of the rider so I guess the exception is ONLY for chariots and their crew, so I'm assuming that the skink crew doesn't have to attack the challenger..
Found it on page 55 Good call there! I never thought to look in the Lizardmen RB, I'll be sure to keep that in mind when I make my tourny list!
