Inspired by http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/coatl-conversion-count-as-slann.23031/ , I decided to try my hand at making a Coatl of my own. Mine is a counts-as Starseer instead of a Slann, and I used an old pair of wings from the original Bones kickstarter that were gathering dust in my bits box.
Just like all of my centerpiece models, my 6 year old daughter named it. Without further ado, meet Sparkletooth the Coatl!
Whilst Terradons are a common enough sight in the rain soaked skies of the Saurus Highlands, few villagers have ever laid eyes upon the mystical Coatl. Rare and reclusive, the beasts are believed to bring good luck, and it is a common custom to place a small offering of meat above your door if you desire your fortunes to change for the better, and many villagers can be seen sporting a charm with a single Coatl feather in its centre.
For the Seraphon, the Coatl are also held in high esteem, but for an entirely different reason. The Skinks believe that when one of their most powerful spellcasters, the enigmatic Starseers, falls in battle, their spirit will be reborn in the form of a Coatl. The belief seems to have its origins within the Age of Chaos, when a great Starseer named Maymay died during the perpetual fighting on the Crimson Steppe. Upon returning to Tlaxxili, the Skink priests were shocked to find a freshly hatched baby Coatl in the Starseer's rooms.
Since then, the Coatl are held to be sacrosanct, and no Seraphon will raise a hand against them. Indeed, unlike their other war mounts, Coatl are not raised and trained by the Seraphon of Cote de Saur, but rather, they are sought out by aspiring riders in the boughs of Dane'tre and persueded to aid the Seraphon through offerings of food and affection. Whether there is any truth to the Seraphon's beliefs about the Coatl is impossible to know, though there is no doubt that the Coatl share the Seraphon's hated of Chaos, and in the thick of battle they are formidable opponents, thanks to their innate magical abilities and powerful jaws.
