8th Ed. Cold one Advice... Worst models ever

Hey everyone

forgive me if this is rude, mean or nasty, but I am super frustrated right now... and it really takes a lot to get me riled up.

I've been trying to put one of my cold one cav together, and I must say these are garbage. I can't seem to get the rider on properly, the arms posed without making it look like the rider is jabing his shiled into the cold one's head, and the gaps are brutal. This is not my idea of enjoyable modelling.

What can I do to not make this a painful process. I've built hundreds of models, from dozens of companies, and I must say these are by far the most frustrating things to put together..... arrrrrrrrrgh!

If I can't figure it out, these are going in the trash, or I'm donating them to someone with the patience of a saint.

I had the same problem with the newest models (which I assume you have). I just put the cold ones together separately from the riders and glued them on after they had dried separately, that worked for me and I just dealt with the gaps with either green stuff :/

When I put my CoC together (newest models), I did the same - gluing the cold ones together first (without the head) and then the rider and positioned the spear first to where I wanted it. Then, I glued on the head of the cold one - sometimes having it look a little to one side or tilted a bit down depending on what I wanted the model "look" to achieve. I found that I could still have an attacking look combined with good spear position doing it this way.

Mine are mostly still on their sprue... Cold Ones aren't really worth taking anymore. Some people found a way to get a decent use out of them, but the ugliness of the models stopped me wanting to try. It has to be a really nice looking model for me to try to force it into the army when it doesn't really work anyway.

What are you saying strewart?
Mine with a bit of luck (and Berona's timewarp and speed of light) managed to hack their way through 30 Chosen in one turn! and then run down the rest!
Admittedly, they did have a Scar-Veteran to help.

I don't use the current cold ones any more, I'm currently making a unit of the old metal ones with new DE cold ones, and boy do they look sweet!

I had 8 of the current cold ones that did not have riders. I won an auction that had 3-4 chameleons that included some metal cold one riders. I assumed that they would fit. To my irritation, they did not fit. I used some green stuff and 'converted' (loosest sense of that word) them to fit. They do sit kind of high on the backs of the current cold ones, but they are ok. The metal riders pose seems a little more dynamic that the plastic ones.

I can understand and sympethize with the metal models. I was lucky enough to get a decent sized lizardmen army off Craigslist (around 1500 points) for $20 and it contained a mix of old and new models - including the older metal Skinks riding Cold Ones (though it might acutually be the Regiment of Renown.. not sure how to tell). Most were glued together, but 2 were not. WOW... talk about a pain to glue! Not only were the cold ones stance in a hard position, to get the unsupported tail to stay without pinning was crazy. lol.
So, next question. For those who do pinning - what tools do you use and what size drill bit? Or is it a specific type of drill for hobby only?

Find the smallest sharpest drill bit you can,
and get hold of a pinvise, bassicly a manual drill,
and usualy people just use paperclips or something similarly sized as pins.

I have a unit of those guys on my shelf and
they where by far the most agrivating unit to put together to date.

Ps. the only diference between thr RotR unit and the regular unit
is the inclusion of Tichi-huichi.

Nice photo, n810! Thank you for the tips. Looks like I just have the normal regiment as i don't have that Tichi-huichi model. So with the model's soft metal I suppose a battery operated small dremel tool would be too fast and uncontroling for pinning? I guess I could use it without the power and turn by hand.

Well I you have a dremmeel, definately use it,
but be warned the metal will quickly heat up,
so you might want to mount it in a vise or get a
thick leather workmans glove.

or in your case maybe a chainmail gauntlet..?

Ok cool, but you kinda just proved my point. To make them effective, you had to invest a large amount of points in adding a character as well, and invest two spells on them, which is risky because it could get dispelled and it also throws a third of your Slann's spells at one unit. JUST to make them useful. Killing 30 Chosen is, of course, more than 'just useful', but without the spells those cold ones would have been murdered without doing anything.
