I'm just now assembling my Lizardmen Battalion after being out of Warhammer for years. I'm thinking that I will try a unit of CoC to tag along with my army just to chase down half-dead units if necessary. But I really don't know what armament to give them, HW or Spears? I have the same question about saurus and skinks and temple guard. I plan to put my Slann in the TG unit, and have some skinks for blowpipes and some with Krox. The Saurus I assume you want at least 2 reasonably large blocks. Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks! And what a great site, I really love it!
I believe the CoC always have Hand weapons, shields, and spears all the time, I believe you can just model them however you want... I would take a balanced mix of all the other weapon options on our other troops.
but based on 8th rules, if the model has anything else on top of it's HW, it will always use that, instead of the HW. so the COC will always use their spears
When you are mounted with spears, you only use the spear on the turn you charged, otherwise you have to use your hand weapon. Its the one exception, in the rules for mounted spears.
OK let's go at it a different direction. How would you/did you assemble your Saurus cavalry, what weapons and what command?
My CoC have spears and I modeled a full command but with extra models in case I didn't want to field a champ or banner. As for Temple Guard they always have Halberds and shields so that's not much of an option. But I stuck with the halbers and for my champ I just decorated him so he had more little odments to make him stand out a bit. For Saurus I've got a block of 25 spears w/ full command and two blocks of 18 hw/s with full commands as well. Since I don't play tournaments and only friendly (competative) games if I don't take a banner or champ I just stick them in the back and be sure to remove them as casualties first. The reasoning behind the weapons for differant units is because I use my spears as an anvil and have my hw/s guys on the flank as support. There are many theories and discussions upon weather to use hw/s or spears for saurus and I invite you to check out those discussions. Ultimately it depends on weather you like attacks or saves more and how you use your units.
