well Cavalry allays has spears. :p
I usually either run a unit of 5 or
    a unit of 6 with a mounted scar-vet.
and always run them with full command.
and quite possibly a magic banner. :D

If I take them it will be in a higher point level game and I will be taking at least 8 or 9 with a mounted old blood or scar vet in there with them. As Nate stated, full command is a must. I also always take the banner of hanuchi (add d6 to a charge move).

I ussualy don ´t take a champion. 20 points for an extra attack is not worth it for me(but I could be wrong) ;)

It's not about the extra attack. It's about letting the champion take a challenge to allow the scar-vet (or old blood) to dish out serious pain to whatever unit you are fighting in CC.

I always take the unit champions (except in skirmishers or chameleons as I always forget to use the higher BS) for that reason.

If I have a TG/slann bunker, I may put a scar vet in there. I almost never put any heroes in my saurus units (when I take them, it is rare). I would much rather protect my slann from challenges or add to the damage that the COC can deal.

TBH champions are pretty useful even if you don't put a character in the unit. For example, if your cavalry gets charged by a powerful character on a mount, you can challenge with the champion and he has to accept. The champion will most probably die to the enemy character, leaving the mount (e.g. dragon chimera, griffon etc) unable to attack, so you stand a good chance of passing your Ld test, and you haven't lost 4+ models from the unit, which you would probably have done if the champion hadn't soaked up the initial damage.

Thanks for all the replies guys! I am thinking of running them in a unit of 6 or 10 I think 10 will hit alot harder but 6 would be a really nice flanking unit. I have my first game with them coming up against beastmen so I will have to see how they do although i think they should do fairly well against the beasts

10 models is definitely a good idea. I agree with Arli, give them the banner of Huanchi to ensure they can charge from a great distance and therefore you can virtually pick who you want to charge. Ah, beastmen. I have ridiculous amounts of experience fighting against them. What size battle is this?

I've been preferring the banner of swiftness. Constant +1 to move/charge, so +2 inches march. Do you take Huanchi to mess with the opponent's head? ie. he doesn't know exactly where he can/can't place his unit.
