So I just picked up the lizardmen been playing War for bout 6 years now i started with skaven back in 6th ed moved to WoC for 7th and decided that liz would be my 8th ed army.....So my question is this i'm having a hard time picking between using a unit of Cold ones or Using a stegadon, how do you guys use them what do you fit em out with and what do you think is better?
The cold ones have fallen out of favor compared to the stegadons, I would take an ancient stegadon for the strength 6 and the double blowpipes. Putting characters on top of the stegadon would be unwise.
Canegham is correct. The stegadon offers much more bang for the buck. I do think there is a place for a character on top though (as long as you can get it across the field without getting hit by war machines). A skink chief with warspear is awesome (especially against ASF HE).
Thanks I wasn't too sure about the stego, only because i'm not a big fan of LT, but then again I will need something else to draw focus from my Gen.
Correct me if I am wrong, but I was under the impression in 8th ed there is no longer a + to shooting at a large target. The main fear is TLoS, premeasuring, laser guided cannon balls...
Right, the +1 to hit large targets is gone. Also, large targets cannot claim soft cover for standing behind fences and such. It is really not a very important rule anymore.
I'd agree with everyone above. The only use I can find for COC is to get a carnosaur/old blood into combat alive - they're a very expensive shield!
I have been having great success with running 10 CoC on the flank supported by a Ancient with a Skink Chief and War Spear, not much can take a front charge from a steg and a unit of CoC in the flank. That is anytime other than when they charge a unit of DE Executioners that, then in turn. get Mind Razor cast on them, with total power, making them S10 DE Executioners (S9 + 1 for Halberds); with eternal hatred and an extra attack from the Cauldron of Blood and then take 10 & 12 wounds on each unit before they can ever got a chance to swing. Then they no work so good. This actually happened to me last week in the Ard Boyz (It SUCKED!) but other than that situation pretty solid.
Maybe a minor correction in this case, but it might matter in other situations... mindrazor boosts strength to the LD value of the model, but that model's weapon strength bonus no longer applies. So for example kroxigors go to str 7, not 9.
it wouyld be the ideal way to get him accross the board but saddly this addition is anti mounted units and all about being on food, were 7th was the opposite
It may have been S9 either way they laid waste to my Steg and my CoC before they ever had a chance to swing.
I must say I am tempted to go and try Cold One Cav out before the more bodies on the table the better at the moment. Ancient stegs cannot march and fire their blowpipes right? In which case im finding them kinda pointless as generally if your within 12 your charging or being charged. I would not 100% rule them out and I see them playing this use: A slightly quicker more reliable (due to more attacks) anti-harrasser unit. I am tempted to run a small unit with a musician to run around protecting my skinks/salamanders from things like harpies or shades etc.
Both units are effective in their own rights but if I had to choose I would take a Stego over saurus cav. With impact hits and then thunderstomp you get a lot of potential damage. The only problem with Saurus Cav is that their initiative is low. With the new close combat rules you wont be attacking first even on a charge....unless of course you charge snotlings or your opponent is lizardmen as well and you charge...well anything but skinks lol.
