i played a game yesterday and my opponent took life and, on turn four he casted dwellers on my slann who was by it's self, and i rolled a four for my toughness test and i died?? does this work even when he is ethereal?

I believe it does affect him. You should have gotten your ward save (unless I am mistaken).

Nah, it's a strenght test or be slain. No saves of any kinds allowed
