So I purchased some assembled models from Ebay a while back, now I've gotten around to painting again I'm finding it difficult to paint the damn thing.

The hardest bits to paint are the gaps between the howdah exposing the Stegadons scales underneath, any advice on painting this model? :/

Get some paint on the scales first, and don't worry about getting paint on the bottom of the howdah .
then go back later and carefully paint the bottom of the howdah, preferably with a wide flat brush.

... hmm I wonder if an old tooth brush might be the tool for painting some of those hard to reach spots..?

Prime it black with a spray can if possible, turn it upside down and spray that first, then when you add the colours if you miss any it won't show as much.

Or prime the whole thing white, use a heavy wash to stain the howdah and the paint the steg.
