Does anyone know if dogs of war are still playable in 8th and if so are they allowed to be used in a Lizardmen army. I've been abscent from the game for awhile and someone told me that Dogs of War were had a giant. I had an idea of making some type of giant kroxigor and using the rules of a giant for it.
In my opinion, no. They're not mentioned in the rule book or any recent Army Book, plus their Army Book has been unavailable for years.
To be more accurate, I believe that there is a line in each of the FAQs ( I did not see it in the Lizardmen FAQ though). That states: Dogs of War Ignore all references to Dogs of War. I think that may only be in books where there is a reference to using them. I read it in the Ogre Kingdom FAQ.
I guess that line only refers to the older books that actually still had a reference to DoW... Unfortunately, they are pretty much unplayable now, you still could in friendlies with opponents permission but they are not even really designed for 8th ed so I'm not sure how balanced it would be. When GW first started removing them from army books, they said the reason was so that they had the flexibility to do more with them in the future, redevelop the line and such. And there are constantly rumours that they will return, so they may not be gone for good but certainly for now they would only be for fun games.
Well I was in one of the Dogs of war forums and the consensus is that they do slightly better under 8th edition rules but generally there stuff is still to expensive for want it does especial pikemen. and nothing they have is overpowered and any way.
Individually, they aren't overpowered, I'm pretty sure the big problem with them from a GW point of view was that they unbalanced armies, which is why the units are a bit overpriced I guess. No shooting in your VC army? Add some archers. No heavy long range LM firepower? Add a cannon.
