Hi guys. I've got a doubles tournament coming up at the end of March and i need some general advice. The teams are as follows: 1 = O&G and Lizardmen (me!) 2 = Daemons and Chaos Warriors 3 = O&G and Dark Elves 4 = Wood Elves and Skaven 5 = High Elves and vamps Important things to note is that its using the allies rules meaning that, as i hate my ally, we don't share panic, leadership, etc but have to share casting dice out as much as poss (likely meaning a gimped magic phase). Points are 2k per army (4k overall). I haven't gone over much with my ally as yet mainly as the new orcs and gobbos book will be out start of march making it hard to plan any kind of list. However, since magic is going to be hella unreliable i was thinking of taking a combat heavy list consisting of roughly the following (slightly impacted by lack of models on my part). 3 units of 30 strong saurus 2/3 units of 10 skinks 2 units of 8 chameleon skins 3 terradons 3 salamanders 1 stegadon with chief with spear 1 oldblood (probably on foot - too expensive for carny) 2 skar vets to buff up units. 1 or 2 priests (generally anti magic) [where do i stick these guys! >.<] Haven't checked out points but that should be approaching 2k give or take. General battle plan is just to make a solid dependable list that can smash things in combat (relatively well) and shoot a little bit. There shouldn't be much in the way of cannons that can threatern big stuff however (though bolt throwers are going to be everywhere). Things i know are likely to be coming that i should be worried about are as follows: bloodthirster 2 hydras large units of trolls treeman abomination maybe a dragon from h-elves. Are there any things that i should be doing with this list of looking to include to avoid the usual threats or anything i'm doing silly with this vein of thought, etc. Critique wanted! Thanks for your help everyone.
I know but i don't think he'll make a list until he has an idea about what the new book is like. I know that he likes orc based lists with gobbo support (plus the obligatory fanatics). I don't know a lot about orcs and gobbos (particularly in 8th edition) so can't really say more unfortunately but i have messaged him to ask if he has any ideas. Also, i should add giant (at least one in the o&g list) will be coming our way >.<
Is your friend going to use 8th or 7th ed. orc book? As far as I know new book is supposed to come out next month I'd take slann, he doestn have to be a expensive, just bsb, becalming and all spells and you're ready to go.
The problem with taking a slann is that we will get 2d6 magic dice between our two armies which will then be halved, meaning i will get an average of 4 dice. This does not equel a strong magic phase (1 decent spell or 2 semi decent spells - and that's with the average. Maximum is 6 dice = 2 decent spells, 3 mehish spells or 1 mega spell. and the mimimum is 1 dice, which is skip the magic phase bad ). I don't think it's justified spending 400-500 points on a model that will, on average, not have a decent impact on the game and instead, replace a big chunk of my army
With the extra dice you get from focused rumination, you will have more +1 die for each spell. Also, your partner can always allow you to have more than half the dice (on a good roll of the winds of magic).
Even with focused rumination you will only get 1 or possibly 2 more dice a turn, which is not a whole lot for what will be a 500 point slann (plus another 300 odd points for the TG unit). A slann is there to be able to case 4/5 spells a turn and machine guy the enemy down so it feels like a waste unless you have the dice to use it well :/
TG isnt needed, too many points, but with 300pts you get bsb slann with 1 dicipline, IMO not too expensive.
