can the effects of the engine of the gods be used when the stegadon is in close combat?

    Yes.

Although your priest won't survive too many combats, at least not for a long time...

    You could do this:

    Enemy knights
    ..................
    skinks (or other cheap unit)
    ....................
    EotG

The enemy knights (have to) charge your skinks, you hold. The skinks will lose badly and break, only to be caught.
The enemy knights overrun into your EotG. This battle will be fought next turn, unless you had your EotG in combat! (But then you should angle your skinks away ;))
In your turn, you can do Burning Alignment to do damage. He gets to strike with less models.
In addition to that; you can counter-charge him with, for instance, kroxigors.

It's risky, and it won't pay off a lot of times. But it's good to have knowledge, right?

of course, if you have space, use the hunteds example, but place the stegadon further back, so hopefully once the skinks are gone you can counter charge and get the lovely impact hits too!

quite nice to put the one use 2+ ward on your priest, most people are relying on killing him in the first round to avoid getting burning alignments hitting multiple units.
