i have had a look at some of the ETC stuff and to be honest the current draft looks horrendous, like they are trying to turn the game into etchammer not warhammer, now i understand small comp tweaks that local gaming clubs/communities use but i cannot understand this whole etc thing, can some enlighten me when people play these rules, what is the purpose and why do so many people seem to write up etc lists as i have been to a few club scene tourniments, and differant gaming clubs official tourniments and such but have never come across people playing etc, but on here everyone seems to
ETC rules are there to eat your cheese! Horrible, right? Basically, the heavily modded rules level the playing field. Some armies/characters/units are made stronger than others usually as an oversight. For istance, take a look at our Salamanders. March and shoot and skirmish and breath fire and template attacks and... All that for a small 75 point package. And we can have 6 of them in any regular game. Goodness gracious. ETC makes them a little less of a worry for your opponent. The same stuff happens to HE Eagles and the Hellcannon and whatnot. Overpowered stuff gets brought to a reasonable level. The European Team Championship, as it stands for, is an international competition. Players represent their country, rather than themselves like in a normal tournament. I have not participated in any of this myself but my understanding is that you play within your country, using the ETC restrictions, and the top 8 from each country go to the international event. Kind of like the Olympics, only dorkier.
Hello, I will try to explain it First of all the "E" in ETC stands for European. Each country in Europe has it's own restrictions, because they think that pure WFB 8 edition is imbalanced. So when it comes to constructiong the draft Captains of the teams that participate in ETC gathers and make the drafts by pointing out most imbalanced things, that came up durring some tournaments. The idea of ETC dates back to 7th edition and all the beautifull armybooks that GW released (DoCh, VC, DE, SK) The problem is that they don't necessarily work so good in 8th. (wide Daemons), but the glass has been broken, and so you have to make those restrictions. I think that they over did it, but that is mine opinion, I mean, some players don't know how to deal with something, they decide to nerf or limit it, rather than alter thier strategy or build. I know that Warhammer has its cons, like a 175 point Hydra, or the hellpit abbomination, or the Old Steam tank, but GW in on a good way to bring balance to the new book(compare 7th edition VC AB and the 8th Edition VC AB) that was why they made the 8 th edition VC ab so quick, because the rules there were just not right for the standards of 8th (charging in the magic phase, recasting, 8 oints per ghoul wtf!?!?). Thats is why they made ETC, to keep an illusion of balance. I think that the ETC is an exaggeration, I don't mind some minor changes, like Look out sir from spells that instakill (13'th Pit of shades, dwelles), or capping the power dice to 12, so you can't use more than 12. Because DE with thier dagger would just destroy you, or capping lords on lower oint values, because a chaos lord or a Slann on a 1200 can bring lots of pain. But the worst part of it, is because this years ETC is held in Poland, all major tournaments, and a lot local ones are at ETC, so the "national team can practice" :/
In my opinion, ETC is an attempt to retro-fit Warhammer back into 7th edition. Giving points for units at half strength or fleeing, as one example. The whole problem with comp is that it has a cascading effect. Tweak one rule, and now three others need tweaking. It's a very slippery slope. Example: Nerf the magic phase, so now you have to nerf horde units. I also question whether or not any of the ETC people actually played any 8th Ed Warhammer before going the comp route. By that, I mean using ALL of the terrain rules, and using ALL of the scenarios, not just Battleline. Having to prepare for the possibility of Blood & Glory or Watchtower makes you build a more balanced list. My best friend has been running a GT in my area for 7 years. The last two, it's been 3000 pts, no grand army, special characters allowed. That's it. 5 games, using BRB scenarios. We don't use Battle for the Pass simply because it's not feasible in a tourney setting. There's ZERO comp, except for no grand army, if you want to call that comp. ETC people predicted doom and gloom. "Oh, the Demons and Dark Elves will run rampant on the weaker armies!" The results? Last year Wood Elves won. This year Beastmen. Runner-up was Bretonnia. None of the supposed "top tier" armies even came close. In comparison, I attended the North Star GT last year. They used the ETC rules. The winner? Skaven. So much for leveling the playing field. If you can't tell, I'm not a big fan of comp, and absolutely despise ETC.
Hello A wery interesting post but to don't make any more offtopic: http://www.mediafire.com/?cyde70flve4cgp2 Here are this years Armylist for the ETC. Most Lizardmen Player had opt to go Dual Slann with Light. (The ETC FaQ allows for 2 of the same spells if you have Loremaster). The Polish Team Player has a Slann that is pretty much the same as the one I play.
