Higher State of Consciousness Ethereal Slann with Crown of Command

LD 9, Cold Blooded, Stubborn, Ethereal

Charge the toad into a Death Star Horde Unit and then just let him sit there and tie them up (as long as they don't have any magic items to hurt the toad with that is).

Once the unit is tied up the toad then can -

Depending on you choice of magical Lore:
Lore of Death - Purple Sun them into oblivion.
Lore of Life - Shield of Thorns them death.

    Pretty Cheeky I know.

I've been using that, works well. Not in a tournament list, but in a friendly game.

I wouldnt charge it into the Deathstar unit, cause it can have magical attacks (GG) or includes 2 or more hitty characters (Chosen)

Deathstars regularly include charracters, who regularly carry magical gear, and to top it all off Han Solo Mc'frog can't refuce challenges (hello my name is Skulltaker).

In the case the slaan can actually take on the deathstar (due to foolish lack of magical attacks most likely), wouldn't it be great to have him tossing out boosted light spells right in the thick of it where they can effect all of your other fighting units ;)

Around here most folks don't put heroes in horde units.

You see Hordes like these or some variation of:

18 - 20 Trolls (gives like 45 attacks something insane like that).
    40+ Chaos Marauders
    40+ Empire Flagellants
    40+ Dwarf Warriors
    50+ Savage Orcs
    60+ Skaven Slaves
60+ Night Goblins (with obligatory Fanatics)

But because of Hordes being magnets for things like Purple Suns, Pit of Shades and Dwellers Below people are hesitant about putting Characters in these units.

Hmm thats a pretty nice idea, the ethereal Slann is a good way to draw out fanatics and not be harmed by them! Still, I find it hard to justify the cost of ethereal for the protection it gives.

Ahh you mean horde units, that's totally different from deathstars.
Well in that case as long as you can keep frogger safe from enemy magic he can totally hold them for the duration of the game if need be, just use the rest of the army to keep characters at bay.

Also, i belive 40 is the max for a flagellant unit, so not 40+

The damage from shield of thorns takes place in the magic phase and will not count toward combat rez.

You are correct, but still killing units that can not hit you.

I used Lore of Death on a Ghost Slann in a unit of Saurus Warrior yesterday and worked out pretty well, got the spell Purple Sun off twice, but was against Dark Elves, I5. But killed 5 Witch Elves in the first combat and the 3 Corsairs later. Imagine the damage it would do to Dwarves!

nasty but its quite expensive thats about 350 points and if you're facing the wrong army you are screwed
one more thing do you get to know what magic armys have before battle overwise you dont know what youre facing a lucky dip saying that dosent mean i wont use it to annoy my friend one time

No we dont play that you have to declare magic items before the game, so yes you are correct to say I that, I could have been royally hosed. hehe

As always, casting Purple suns without popping Potion of Speed with a frogg is risky business, and won't be worth the risk unless you are looking to kill of low initiative characters or mass low initiative Inf. due to the fact that a missfire will most likely fry the frogg.

But i can see the use of this tactic with a life slann, since he will be regaining a fair bit of wounds through spells, you wouldn't need to worry about a single hero wacking at you (Unless we're talking a LM/DoC/WoC one)

Tbh, this seems very temting to try out in a dual slann list (3k+) - i've allways been running a oldblood with AoD along with a slann for 3k games, but a ghost frogg instead of the oldblood might be a fun change of pace.

The ethereal slann with crown of command will benefit from the being BSB with banner of discipline. That way, you have a ld 10, rerollable stubborn frog who will almost never break.

if you're going down this route, wouldn't you be better off taking an oldblood tooled with defensive items and the crown of command? ok, not as durable and more likely to break, but he should be able to dish out a fair bit of damage with just his normal attacks, and should be a fair bit cheaper.

An oldblood would do very well at holding up normal s3/s4 inf. (I guess most of us has had fun tieing up units even with a Scarvet on CO with Crown of Command ;)) - But when we're talking deathstars, i don't see an oldblood surviving for very long - Having 9+ str5+, and probbably armour piercing attacks comming his way every turn.
