Hey i have decided to build an army, and lizardmen definitely was the way to go. I am trying to make a solid basic 750 point army that i can build upon as i get more models. Skink Priest -Dispel Scroll 15x Saurus 15x Saurus 12x Skink Skirmishers 6x Chameleons 1x Salamander -extra handler 1x Salamander -extra handler = 736 points. Decided to go model heavy for such a small game. Have some spare points to use up. Any and all advice would be great.
That is a good start. At that points level, you should own most everything that you face. The salamanders will decimate anything they hit. Saurus are very tough at this points level as well. You may want to consider joining the 2 units of 15 into one unit though. Not to make it a horde, just to make it a little more beefy. If you want, drop it to one unit of 25 and add more skirmishers.
I like it. I will actually advocate for a horde of saurus. I routinely use saurus spearmen in a horde, and honestly it crushes EVERYTHING that hits it, or that it hits. Its slightly vulnerable to a flank charge, and depending on terrain might be a bit difficult to wheel about the battlefield...BUT... I have never seen mine get broken. Typically you will be steadfast, so even on the rare instance you lose combat, you still test unmodified LD, and with the supporting attacks, plus the rank because of spears, PLUS the rank because of a horde, if you have 40+ you get to hit back with 4 ranks...its...its beautiful. Quick anecdote...I had a guy with chosen warriors of Khorne ram his block of 20 warriors into my saurus. I think between the 2 hand weapons, frenzy, chosen and other shenanigans he had like 5 attacks with each guy...but with frontage of only 6, plus supporting he hit me with 36 attacks or so? But when I brought to bear the mighty pincussion of saurus spears, and outnumbered his attacks, then drove him off as well and THEN chased him down and killed them to a man...it was GLORIOUS!!! carnage, my friend, carnage. Welcome to lizardmen and the beauty that is us.
I like the suggestion of going with one unit of saurus (approx 25) and adding in another skink skirmisher unit (could go 2x10 if you were stretched for points). At this points level, skink skirmishers, salamanders and saurus are all quite powerful and work together very well. It wouldn't hurt to make your priest level 2 either (if you can find the points). You should do well with the list as it is though. Personally I would not go horde with the saurus. A few reasons but mostly because it is unlikely that they'll be able to use all their attacks (have to be base-to-base to enemy to attack) and it will be sacrificing valuable combat resolution. Regarding your comment on a 'model heavy list' I think that is one of the major advantages of lizardmen at low point games. We can field lots of units that do a lot of damage in their own right. Not many armies can cope with that
Thanks for the advice there, will definitely have to have a few battles with a combination of the advice below and see which one works out for me overall, but i am excited to use this army. Later on i can start adding more units and make it less plain.
I agree with the idea of a large-ish Saurus unit, and a few skink units to re-direct things. I use two units of 20 for 800 points lists, but that's just me.
