Hey guys, this'll be my first foray into the game of Warhammer. (I play 40k but I'm not necessarily any good! ) If you happen to peruse this list, I'd appreciate any thoughts and suggestions. Lord - Slann Mage-Priest BSB Reservoir Harmonic Convergence Lore: High Magic Hero - Skink Priest Level 2 Wizard Dispel Scroll Lore: Not certain but probably Heavens Core - Saurus Warriors X16 Full Command Core - Saurus Warriors X16 Full Command Core - Skink Skirmishers X20 Patrol Leader Core - Skink Skirmishers X20 Patrol Leader Special - Stegadon Unstoppable Stampede Sharpened Horns Total: 1457 (WIP amount) The plan is to stick the Skink Priest in one of the units of Skirmishers and whittle down the enemy with a hale of magic and blowdarts. Any large aggressive blocks will get charged by the Steg and then flanked by Saurus warriors. The Slann will sit in one of the warriors units and stick to the opposite side of the army as the priest. What do you guys think? AquaBoar
Hey there, Starting your first game of warhammer, always fun! As for your list; there are some downsides to it: A slann is a heavy strain on the points in small battles. But if you manage to build around him, he's worth it. This isn't a problem, just something I wanted to note. You went magic-heavy, so a skink priest is fine here. He is also well-suited for the job. Your saurus warriors need extra bodies though. At 16 a piece, it only takes a few casualties before they pretty much become combat ineffective. Your enemies will have either more bodies, more punch or more armor so that your small unit can't do any real damage and just folds. 20+ is the minimum for me. Even in smaller battles. For example: Your Saurus take 6 casualties from various sources: a fireball, 2-3 rounds of shooting. You now only have 10 guys remaining. Any charge from a solid infantry unit will take away your steadfast, and any charge from a monster or big cavalry unit will just destroy you. With some more guys in there, you actually stand a chance of holding for at least 1 turn, probably more. So that your stegadon can come in and crash the party. The skink skirmisher units don't need their patrol leaders, keep them cheap and run them around! Also, are you using blowpipes? Javelins&shields are considered to be better, but I like to go for a split. Stegadon is very good! Keep him around your Slann's Ld/BSB bubble though, he's gonna need it. Have fun and good luck in your first battle! The Hunted
Slann is imo abit expensive for 1500 points game but I've tried it and had success with it. Though if I were you I would swap out reservoir for channeling staff since you have Harmonic convergence on him and with the channeling staff you will channel on 5+ on 3 dices wich in i think is better than reservoir (if you had to choose between the two) and it makes him 5 points cheaper. Heavens is a good lore for a level 2 wizard since it doesn't have alot of high casting value spells. Also I would much rather have 4 units of 10 skirmishers than 2 units of 20 for redirecting and harrasing and drop the patrol leaders.
I agree with Frosk for the most part. I think a Slann is alot of points below 2K but I also think our army suffers without one. I don't have a problem bringing a cheap Slann but he really shines at 2k+. Also I'm not sure you need a lvl 2 Skink Priest with a Slann. You have to consider how often you are actually going to cast Heaven spells. I think a lvl 1 with Beasts is better for buffs.
Thanks for all the quick replies guys! I think I'm going to follow your advice and bump the warriors up to 20 and split the skinks into 4 packs of 10. I think I may also drop the Skink Priest to level 1 (He's mostly just there for Arcane Vassal) and give him Beast. So that new list looks like this: Slann Mage-Priest BSB Channeling Staff Harmonic Convergence Lore of High Magic Skink Priest Dispel Scroll Lore of Beasts Stegadon Unstoppable Stampede Sharpened Horns 2 of Saurus Warriors X20 Full Command HW&S 4 of Skink Skirmishers X10 2 with Blowpipes, 2 with Jav&S This should give me a good foundation from which to grow the army too. Please let me know if you think there are any glaring holes in the list. Thanks a bunch! AquaBoar
Looks like a solid list. I haven't use a stegadon with unstoppable stampede because I don't think one extra attack when you charge will matter much but it's a cheap upgrade, please let me know what you think about it after playing with it. Other than that in the future you can add 20 temple guards and 1-2 salamanders when you start playing with more points
you COULD* if you wanted to, TG are definetely my 2nd favourite unit in this army plus they really compliment the slann youve taken, with HM its even better!!! i would also encourage you to look into whatever YOU want to have in your army, that is how you get the most fun!!!! and of course itll be an army of razordons cause they are just the best thing like ever if i could have one in real life id be the happiest man on earth
