Fool's Gold

Hey guys,

I am painting my saurus warriors at the moment and the only thing that is bugging me is the unclean style of my gold and it looks quite in your face.

I am using shining gold with a thinned flesh wash with a little bit of badab black.

Can you guys suggest a really browny/darkish gold that goes perfectly with lizardmen (Preferably with pics!) so that I can maybe invest in an easier way of doing it.

The little swatches on the games workshop website don't really show of the metalics very well and dwarf bronze/burnished gold looked like a potential candidate?

I'd suggest a Scorched Brown/Shining Gold mix for you. If you want, you can dry brush or touch up with a layer of Shining Gold. Not only is that going to get yo a nice, dark gold, but its also a great 1st coat for metallics. In general anytime I use the bronze's or golds I mix some brown or black in for a smoother base coat.

Dwarf Bronze is quite nice. I usually use either that or shining gold as a base for gold. If its too bright or standing out too much, try just adding more wash to it. I would suggest devlan mud, get it as even as you can. Black usually will make gold look a little dirty if it doesn't drain completely into the creases.

Adding a bit of scorched brown, as suggested, is also a good way to darken and mute the gold.

I perfer enamel based Metalics as they go on smother and have more metal content,
the "gold" on my Lizards is actualy Copper.

Enamel are great, but not always easy to use! And make sure you don't mess up because they're hard to correct. Still, they pretty much make the best metal highlights. With regular paints, I'd recommend a base of scorched brown, then a thin layer of Dwarf Bronze, then a thin layer of Shining gold. Now, if you want "sparkly" clean gold, highlight with Mithril Silver and wash with Ogryn Flesh. If you want your gold to look worn, skip the Mithril Silver and wash with Devlan Mud (sse a mixture of Devlan mud and water 3:1 and do a few layer making sure you let dry in between layers).

I have found completely covering the area with Tin Bitz, then dry brushing on the Shining Gold looks good. Try it on a spare saurus banner or something to see if you like it.

Edit: Seems I got it to work and its now really big....I suppose thats good?


Hrm, the picture doesn't really show the darkness of the Tin Bitz in there : /
