Hey all, Just a thought on another of those "cheap" tactics that seem to get people thinking. If a Skink Chief is riding a Terradon in a unit of Terradon riders, and has the Carnosaur Pendant, once its gone off he has Frenzy, so has to charge etc. He has 90 degree sight himself and the unit as a whole has 360, I can't find any rule that states he'd use the units LOS for his forced charge, just that he can charge out of the unit if the unit won't follow his forced charge. therefore, a couple of tricksy thoughts: 1/ Place him facing back into the unit so as to not be forced into a charge... Being careful that noone swings a bait unit behind you. The unit has 360 sight so can do as they like and he'll still be able to perform. 2/ If such is the case, would he be able to shoot as normal simce he's technically part of the unit? Is this valid? Thoughts? Comments?
Well it falls into that funny area of things GW didn't originally plan, so you have to use precedent to figure out what the correct answer most likely is (until the FAQ). A single character on foot typically has 360 line of sight, but when joined to an infantry block is bound by the unit's LOS restrictions. I'd say being part of a unit that has 360 line of sight would give him 360 line of sight... it's not like the other terradon riders are going to keep secrets from him or something! It makes sense that when solo he'd only be able to see what is in front of him, the idea with a whole unit of flyers is they can all be looking at different things and keeping situational awareness. So yeah, I wouldn't plan your Carno pendant/forced charge shielding thing too thoroughly, most people you play will smell a dirty rules lawyer. Also, assuming you decide you want to give the skink chief 90 degree arc of sight, then he wouldn't be able to shoot at anything he can't see, as shooting line of sight is determined on a per model basis.
Yeah you can't give him one LoS in one phase, and a different LoS in another phase... Its one or the other. In the terradon unit he will get 360 degree LoS like the rest of them so will have to charge if frenzied.
As an afterthought, maybe that is why GW has the rule "characters can't join units of flyers". Imagine putting your big nasty guy in with some cheap flyers and getting 360 LOS... scary.
Cheers guys, Was just an idea that jumped into my head when playing with item combo's. Always looking for unique setups
