I've been working my way through the five stages of grief following our book release:
Denial- "Hey, this isn't too bad... Right? My favorite guy is pretty good, I have a sweet converted model..."
Anger- "Shockingly feeble dinosaurs... Poorly worded rules... Total lack of inspiration... Trounced by Chaos Warrior and High Elf cool new units yet again... Yes. Yes, it IS that bad! !@*$*&&%$%!!!!!"
Bargaining- "Maybe if we collectively refuse to buy any more of the new models, they'll release an amended book and personal apology..."
Depression- "Sigh. Time to buy an X-Box or something until next edition..."
And now, grudgingly, Acceptance. Dag nabbit, I've put too much time and money into my hobby to let a lackluster rule set stand in the way of the Will of the Old Ones (And, frankly, the fact that I'm able to spend time whining about table top game rules means I'm better off than I have any right to be)! The Beastmen players stand tall and proud at my game store, and so shall I!
So, here's the most interesting approaches I've come across or thought of so far for getting back in the game:
Vassal Malestrom: Slann with Deliberations blasts everything through a satellite cloud of skink vassals. Probably need to go ethereal to save points on the temple guard. Majorly power dice dependent, but that's the Slann for you. Troglodon could work here as a more resilient vassal; doubt the opponent will perceive it as any kind of threat
.
The Classic: TG bunker, kitted Slann. Add support units as necessary. Elf Magic lore attribute has been kinda fun thus far. World-walking salamander into the flank will only work so many times, but when it does, wow.
Super Stampede: Stegadons are still great, so let's go for it! Two in rare, three in special, two more ridden by characters... That leaves just enough points for core at 2500. Come at me, chariot-spam chimera-flock Warriors! (They still win this matchup, but at least it'll give 'em pause for thought, however briefly). Now, do I really want to buy and paint four more stegadons? Could probably tone this down into a more reasonable monster mash list, but the other monsters are rather decrepit.
I've plenty more ideas churning about; what else have you guys come up with?
