Thinking of using this guy against an Ogre opponent. The ability to negate his charging bonuses (impact hits) seems massive! Does anyone know if the unit Gor Rok is with also benefits from his Shield of Eons?

I would say it applies to the unit he has joined, just like the unit gains the Stubborn Special rule once he joins the unit. Otherwise kind of a lame-o special rule.

The rule state that any charge made against him loses any and all benefits from charging.

So no +1 combat res for the charge, pretty sweet, had over looked that one before.

This guy might be decent special character after all.

Yea he's probaly our best special character,
Never see many list with him though...?

Ps. I believe he has some rules clarifications in the official Lizardmen FAQ.

Pss. I believe his shield now basicly counts as a portable wall in 8th. :)

    Edit:
    PPss.
Not sure if there are any other benefits for wall terrain, might be worth a check.

it doesn't negate charge bonuses any more :( it only counts as an obstacle so dangerous terrain tests must be made by cavalry and such as well as a -1 to hit him in the first round of combat. He's still awesome though and i take him all of the time for the stubborn special rule.

My problem with Gor-Roq is that he has no ward save. If you hit him with high enough Strength (which many combat characters, monsters and even some infantry blocks are capable of), or with killy magic, he's got no real defence. It's cool to ignore HKB and KB, and to make cavalry think twice about charging you, but honestly I'd prefer a normal Scar-Vet with halberd and Armour of Destiny/Talisman of Preservation. Cheaper, hits at S6, and you've got awesome defence.

Exactly, the only time I took him was in a 2400 point tourny and he was smacked down pretty quickly by Skull Taker, then the unit of Bloodletter he was in just went to town on the Saurus Unit. Was pretty ugly.

Skull taker... sheesh no wonder he died,
we probaly need a tooled out Oldblood to even have a chance against him.
Gor-rok is more like a scar vet Special character.

It's weird, isn't it? The only ones who do are stuck with 5+ ward, and they both are insanely costed, next to generic builds. Even taking into account the shake-up that 8th edition generic magic items caused, I'm not sure any of them were much better prior.

Not to mention magic. Then again, Daemons are broken as hell, so don't feel bad ;)
I feel bad for Gor-Rok, because he's the only named hero that comes close to being worth his points. His forcing of re-rolls to wound is hilarious, as is immunity to HKB and KB (so at least he can fight Grave Guard without fear). Re-rolling to hit in the first round of combat is definitely helpful, especially as he's stuck at S5.
However, the twin problems of no ward (meaning while gimmicks like KB can't take him down, everything else can) and only S5 (a meagre amount of points upgrade a regular Scar-Vet to S6) let him down.
Plus, like a lot of our heroes, because we up armour them to take advantage of Scaly Skin baseline, they're good targets for sniper spells (Death magic, Golden Hounds etc). At least generic Scar-Vets get the Talisman of Preservation or Armour of Destiny, Gor-Rok just forces re-rolls to wound and hopes you don't manage more than 1 wound on him.
