Hullo everyone! I've decided to give Warhammer a go again after a wee gap (about 10 years), and I'd like to return to my old army - Lizardmen. A lot has changed in 10 years or so - there are actual models for cold ones (didn't exist when I last played, only the rules existed), saurus are now plastic and not metal (metal core units, wooo!), etc.etc. I've just about finished painting the first batch of units I bought, which just happen to add up to exactly 500 points! Saurus Scar-Veteran with shield, light armour and Biting Blade Skink Priest - level 1 wizard 10x Skinks - Blowpipes 10x Skinks - Javelins 16x Saurus Warrirors - hand weapons and shields because I was an idiot and forgot about spears that can let the second row attack and they're already glued together now. Std. bearer and musician, no champ as the Scar Vet will join up with these chaps. That is exactly 500 points, with the Biting Blade just topping up the last few points. Feel free to comment on that layout, but those just happen to be every single model I currently own, so it's not likely to change! However, I am about to go out and buy some more models to get to me to 1000 or maybe 1500 points. So I'd really appreciate any suggestions as to what to buy! So maybe even if that core 500 isn't optimal, then all the models can find use as part of a larger army. So yes, any tips/ideas for upgrades will be warmly received.
I'd go for a Spear-armed Saurus unit, as well as seeing if you can beef up the Skink Javelins a little by adding a Kroxigor. The Skink Priest can also be upgraded to level 2 with some magic items thrown in.
if you buy more saurus assemble them with spears so when you have 2-3 units you can add a few with HW in each unit. the BRB says its legal to have differently armed models in teh unit as long as the majority have the weapon the whole unit uses. i bought some saurus allready assembled and painted and most are with HW, i'll just mix them with the spear ones and it will be ok
3 Terradons 2 Salamanders 16 Saurus with spears 5 Saurus on Cold One s further down the line... 2 Stegadon (Make at least 1 EoTG) Slann Mage Priest
Thanks everyone. Man I love Lizardmen, such a wonderfully diverse army! So we have a consensus on more Sarus. They're damn tough chaps for mere core units; never skimp on saurus. Side note: What do people feel about command groups for saurus? Worth it or not? Skink braves definitely look kinda not-so-useful. I'll make both units spears (cheers Bibamus, it's all coming back to me now!) since I'll have half spear-assembled and half HW, but there'll be a few which are ambiguous (std bearer and musician) which I'll say are spears, and it'll tip me over half way XD I think a Kroxigor is a good idea - I know that they were awesome when I last played, although I don't know how they fare nowadays. I think one will help, as I'd like the skinks to be a screen for the other units first, and then try and soak up a charge without breaking so I can hit in from the sides with stronger units. A Krox will certainly help that. Hmmm... then what? I don't have enough points for cold one riders, so it's some combo of terradon riders and salamander hunting packs? And damn, I just realised the second-hand army book I got is the 6th edition one, so I need a 7th edition one *hits head*.
Standard Bearers are a (sort of) free point in combat resolution, so pretty much always taken them. Musicians if you feel like it, too, but champions are generally thought to be a waste of points unless you need to protect a hero from challenges (and what sort of Saurus hero needs protection against those? Exactly.). Do it, you know it makes sense!
you have a good selection of core like every one has said i would get a stegadon asap because of thse nice D6+1 S6 impact hits from a ancient steg or 2D6+1 if you put a skink Chief with a stegadon war sprear on him
Gah! ComicsCompulsion (the only Warhammer store in my city) was closed today! However, I did manage to borrow a friend's latest edition Lizardmen army book! Huzzah! Here's what I was thinking for 1000 points maybe: 1x Saurus Scar-Veteran with Maiming Shield and light armour, on foot along with 15x Saurus Warrirors with spears. (can scar vet be armed differently with HW from unit he is in?) 1x Skink Priest upgraded to level 2 (see, I'm listening to you all!) 10x Skink Blowpipe skirmishers 11x Skink Javelins with a... 1x Kroxigor in it. 16x Saurus Warrirors with spears again. Two solid blocks, RAWR! 3x Terradon riders (and also terradons to ride on, or that would be stupid lol) 1x SALAMAND00000RRRR with an extra handler That's 993 points total. I guess I'd make one skink a brave just to top it up a few more points? Here's a google docs version people can make copes of and edit maybe? I cut out all the points values and stats like the forum rules said. http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=0AplOuF608n20dDNIcVUxZWVrTEVNNHNCeTc1YVA2Mmc&hl=en If someone could tell me where in the army book or rulebook I can find how far Salamand0rs can spit, and what the range on blowpipes is, that'd be awesome! Thanks everyone, you're all being very helpful!
blowpipes: 1st skink entry (where the chief and priest rules are at) salamanders: where it says salamanders, under razordons... i think after terradons but before carnosaur in teh army book a hero can have whatever equipment he wants so he is not restricted by the unit he joins
