hi all, will be having my first game at 2500 points tommorow against a local woc player, i have nevr played more than 2k before and will be my first outing against chaos too. Any suggestions on what i should be taking we have agreed to allow proxies so theres nothing i cant field. I am going to try and use my slann with a lore other than life and again im open to suggestions was leaning to light or beasts. Also if you guys know a particular unit i should be keeping an eye out for as i say im fairly new to the hobby so all advice would be great.
consider taking lore of metal. everyone in his army is going to have an excellent armor save, and that's really going to be quite a problem for him. light seems really good too. it covers the weaknesses of our saurus which can only be a good thing.
i was thinking the extra damage on light spells just incase he takes a demon or two, i might be wrong but im sure woc have access to a couple of the demons. i will also be taking a lvl 2 skink so will have a few heavens spells too
The only daemon they have is the daemon prince, and he's terrible for the points. Do you have a general build in mind? What units do you like/dislike? I've played several games vs WoC and I've found that Salamanders are great against marauders and warriors and make sure you take becalming cogitation to help tone down his magic phase. If you take Temple Guard the Razor Standard is a great choice for their banner. Watch out for chaos knights, they're still extremely nasty even with all of the nerfs to cavalry. Hordes of marauders with great weapons (5 points each for WS4 S5) are very dangerous, as are warriors with halberds with mark of khorne (my buddy runs 3 units of 18-- they're walking blenders!). It's also possible to build a 1+AS 3+ward flying Tzeentch sorcerer, it's a pain to kill! Overall, WoC got really good with the changes to 8th, you should have a very close game win or lose.
i tend to0 have a slann in tg then i run a unit of around 20 saurus w spears and another unit of 20 with hw/s. would thn have a couple of unit of skrox maybe 24 skinks and a krox in each. 2 salamanders will certainly be taken and was thinking a steg with skink chief and warspear combo. a unit or 2 of chameleons and probably 2 units of 10 skink skirms to just be a pain will also be taken. i have just converted a skink chief on terradon so would like to take him too just to generally be a thorn in his side.
I play WoC a lot in my little gaming group. Camo skinks and terradons are great, once you get them behind your enemy theres very little he can do about it, they can harass his units for an entire game usually. If he takes a hell cannon, focus your camo skinks on that first, avoid using your poisoned shots on shrines unless you have no other shooting options (because shrines have really great armour saves). Knights will be your biggest problem, if you can kill a even a few of them before they make combat then its worth doing. Lore of metal certainly helps against WoC, particularly against knights, but I don't much like the rest of the spells in the metal list, particularly against WoC. Death is very nice against chaos in my opinion, almost all the spells have their uses. Use the character hunting spells to quickly kill his sorcerors, then turbo soulblight to turn the close combat to your favour.
thanks for the advice guys, played this game and won by 850 victory points. he ran the following 2 units of 5 knights (korne) so had frenzy 2 units of 20 chaos warrior (tzeentch) extra +1 to ward save i think it was a Giant (otherwise known as skink food) Hellfire cannon his heroes were a 4th level sorcerer lord a 2nd level caster and a chaos hero bsb (not sure of name) the game started well for me when my chameleons killed his giant very quickly, unfotunately they were so occupied with his giant i forgot about his hellcanon and it caused 6 wounds on my steg in round 1 killing it. I sent my 2 salamanders after his knights but to be honest they spent most of the game failing to wound them (needed 5's) and they even had a 4+ ward save against shooting so it was tough going. His warrior marched down the centre of the table while his knights harrased my right flank. I sent a unit of 25 cohorts into the knights just to give me time to get my saurus and tg set up so not to be flanked. the skinks were quickly butchered but they bought me a round and fored the knights to pursue(frenzied) out of position. This gave me time for my saurus block to charge a unit of warriors while my krox units flanked it. This combat went well and killed lots of chaos warriors, in the meantime my slann was having some fun with lore of metal on his chaos knights killing 3 of them in one phase and the other 2 in that unit the next. on turn 3 his second unit of warriors charged the flank of my skrox unit not realising i had left just enough space for my TG to get into his flank as he did it. last 2 tutns consisted of my saurus and TG chopping up around 25 chaos warriors and running them down. my chams then got killed by his hellcannon as it lost all its handlers and got hatred and frenzy on monster reaction. (my skinks were not happy). When all was said and done at the end of turn 6 he had 4 knights and a hellcanon left i had 14 saurus, 8 temple guard, slann, old blood, 2 salamanders (less a few crew, hmm tasty) all in all a good day for the lizards.
