Hi Folks,

Looking for some help putting together a 1k Saurus Guard list.

When playing competitively, I generally play quite a skink heavy list - i found a combination quite early on in the hobby that works for me and stuck with it.

I have a load of warriors and guard (and just about every other seraphon model going!) at home that never come out of the case so I quite fancy trying to get a workable list based around saurus guard.

EDIT: The list would be for playing friendly games, not competitave (unless it kicks ass!)

I see a few folks use them on various battle reports online and all that just wondering what works well with them in terms of synergies.

I usually play 1k but bigger lists are welcome too!

This is what im thinking:

I think you may be better off taking 3 units of guards and the Eternal Starhost, it won't help against MW but normal wounds will bounce off.

If your opponent doesn't have access to mortal wounds then Eternal Starhost is almost unkillable and will also toss out lots of damage. Plus, you would be 2 or 3 drops while gaining an extra relic and starting command point.

Just realized I should give you the list I use for friendly 1k games as it happens to be an Eternal Starhost:

Allegiance: Seraphon
- Mortal Realm: Ghyran

LEADERS:
Skink Starpriest
(80)
- General
- Command Trait : Master of Star Rituals
- Artefact : Wand of Restoration

Saurus Sunblood (120)
- Artefact : Ghyrstrike
Saurus Eternity Warden (140)

UNITS:
10 x Saurus Guard (180)
5 x Saurus Guard (90)
5 x Saurus Guard (90)
3 x Razordons (120)

BATTALIONS:
Eternal Starhost
(150)

ENDLESS SPELLS:
Prismatic Palisade
(30)

TOTAL: 1000/1000
EXTRA COMMAND POINTS: 1
WOUNDS: 47

Note: This is only a friendly list if your opponent has access to mortal wounds. If not he will hate you. So know your audience I suppose. lol

I played this not long ago and it did pretty well. Talisman of the Watcher gives you automatic re-roll 1s to saves for one of the units in combat, and another unit can get it from mystic shield. You can summon in a razordon or 10 skinks every turn for screening/mobility and shooting.

LizardWizard's list is more aggressive because it doesn't have a Slann.

Just tried this list last night in a casual game (had to proxy some warriors as guards) and it was very fun. SCE enemy with a few Mortal wounds (retributors on 6's I think, plus the comet spell.) so I took some whacks, but for the most part this was fine (especially since summon startlight negated the on 6 mortals)

Curious as to how you play the list

Curious as to how you play the list

It will obviously depend somewhat on the battle plan. However, there are a few key tactics that pretty much stay the same.

Buff your 10x Saurus Guard unit with the following effects:
  • Summon Starlight
  • Serpents Staff
  • Priest Prayer from Command Trait
Then use your Sunblood's Command ability on the intended targets of your 10x Guard.

Normally you will have to split up the deathstar. However, you want to keep the Sunblood, Eternity Warden, and Skink Starpriest in range of your large Guard unit. The other two units of Guard are used to block lanes, hold objectives, ect.

The Razordons simply go where artillery is needed. Shoot the things you don't want to fight in combat or can't reach with combat. Try to keep them safe and alive until they have completed this goal. After that point be aggressive with them. Razordons are particularly good at blocking charges.

The Prismatic Palisade is extremely versatile. You can use it as advancing cover while you walk your army up field, you can block flanks, clog lanes, the sky is the limit.

If you change the Realm to Ulgu there are some pretty incredible artifacts you can take as well. The Talisman of the Watch and/or Spellmirror can add a lot of survivability to your Saurus Guard when on a nearby hero. Giving a Sunblood -3 rend will about equal out to him having Ghyrstrike, but will actually be more damage vs strong saves. This can turn him into an ideal hero hunter.

2+ saves Rerolling ones and ignoring spells on a 5+ is a bit strong for casual games though. So I stick with Ghyran.

Your opponent missed that those trigger on unmodified 6es, so summon starlight can only mitigate the normal damage.

EDIT@Post below: That's correct, I was not aware of it :)

I am not 100% sure but I think it still works against some Chaos Daemons. Might be Bloodletters.

Still works vs all the things that haven't gotten new books for this edition. So, Blightkings, Blood Letters, Slannesh demons, and lots of other older units are still robbed of their exploding 6's. Most of the new battletomes units have rules stating "on an unmodified to hit roll of x", thus circumventing our TOTALLY FAIR AND BALANCED -1's to hit.

Summon Starlight will always be good. However, it will eventually lose some of its crippling nature once updated wordage is adopted across the platform.

Well neither one of us realized that lol... I prolly lost that battle hardcore then lol... cuz SS did some work lol
