Hail fellow servants of the Old one. New Lizard Man player checking in. Had my first 2000 point game on Friday and it ended in a minor loss for the Lizard Men. Here is roughly what I had and how the battle went: Slann The Focused Rumination The Becalming Cogitation Battle-Standard Plaque of Tepok Temple Guard (20) with full command Saurus Scar-Veteran Hand Weapon, Light Armour, Shield Horned One Saurus (22) with full command & Spears (Scar-Veteran goes here) Skink Skirmishers (10) Skink Skirmishers (10) Skink Priest with Ancient Stegadon Salamander Hunting Pack with additional skink Salamander Hunting Pack with additional skink Kroxigors (3) Faced off against the pansy High Elves: He fielded: Lord on Star Dragon With re-roll armour 1+, 4+ ward save Level 2 Mage scroll caddy. Archers (10) SpearMen (20) Sword Masters (6) Sword Masters (6) Silver Helms(6) Dragon Princes(8) Chariot Chariot Reaping Bolt Thrower Giant Eagle At the end of the battle he had: Lord on Star Dragon (Dragon lost one wound) Repeating Bolt Thrower Giant Eagle Level 2 Mage Archers (7 left) Dragon Princes (2 left) I had: Slann Priest (Untouched) Temple Guard (9 left) Up until turn 3 - 4 I was clearly winning then the Dragon ripped through one regiment after the next. Stegaon Ancient went down without getting to fight back! I lost because of the bloody dragon, what do we have in the list that can deal with such nightmare’s. I did try to magic the brute, but lighting and thunder bolt done nothing. Think I hit him with a good 4 - 5 blasts. Dragon lost it’s wound to 6 skink’s firing their blow pipes! He waited until the majority of my skinks where dead before he committed the dragon. Any advice welcome. Kroak.
lore of metal works wonders against 1+ saves, the dragons 3+ and the dragon princes wich are the main concern. also skinks are nice against a dragon, but the 3+ save can be a b*tch also, regarding your list: 20 TG is way too much, wih 16 yu have the standard 5x4 block that works wonders with 2+ armor save or 11 S5 attacks. also a champion is generally not worth it unless you give him a magic item. i useegest the sword of hornet for 3 S4 ASF attacks before getting sliced and diced (i'm talking about allcomers lists) or the blood statuete of spite... people don't usually expect bound spells from champion so it can be a nasty surpirse asfeter drawing out the dispell scrolls with the slann. your scar veteran makes no sense... besides the fact that he has a mundane hand weapon and shield he has a horned one... it costs 35 points from his magic items pool, the corld one costs 30 points and its outside those funds... failing stupidity on Ld 8 or 9 cold blooded is rarely a concern. there are a lot of good scar vet builds, i suggest looking them up. there is a whole topic regarding those, check the tactica index thread. 22 saurus is again way too much, 12; 15 or 18 are the best unit sizes depending on what you want them to do. 12 saurus with spears no command can be a nice anvil against light infantry, while 15 or 18 saurus can take a charge from most things and stay alive if given spears, standard and musician. the champion is rarely worth it, but he can come in handy if there is a scar vet in the unit. the eotg is nice but a lvl 1 priest won't make it worth its points, with a lvl 2 priest you get 1 exra dispell dice wich is the eotg's true strenght, also a priest with lvl 2 and plaque of tepoc on an eotg becomes effectively a lvl 3 wizard but there are other builds aswell, magic items are good to have on characters kroxigors.... i don't like them, used them a few times and they always dissapointed me, but i'll leave i to others to rant about them
One thing which came up during the game. My opponent claimed that I could not get the -1 to hit for the salamander even though it's specified as a skirmisher. The rule book says that skirmishers have to be unit strength 1. How does this work with the Dark Elf Hydra I hear everyone moan about. Is there a Lizard Man FAQ or Errata on this site? Kroak
The Salamander issue is covered in one of the FAQs on GWs site here : http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/content/article.jsp?categoryId=1000018&pIndex=1&aId=3000006&start=2 IMO it is pretty harsh on the salamanders... but yes, there isn't any -1 to hit when shooting at salamaders, so keep it hidden. As for the dragon, lizardmen really do struggle against any big flying nasties. Unless they're stupid enough to land it where you can pile blowpipe shots into it, there's not a lot you can do. You can try magic, or maybe some ranged attacks like the giant bow, but realistically that's not going to kill the dragon (though you might get the rider if the randomisations are favourable) If you can manage to get it into CC with the dragon without getting eaten by the dragon first, the blade of realities can do quite well.
One more game under the belt: This time I took: Slann, bane head, becalming cogitation, focus of mystery, focused rumination Temple Guard (13) Full cmd Skink skirmishers (10) Skink skirmishers (10) Skink (10) Skink Priest, level 2, Cloak of feathers Skink Priest, level2, Engine of the gods Salamander, extra handler Salamander, extra handler Stegadon Cold One Cavalry (5) Standard, Champion, Huanchi’s Blessed Totem Faced off against Warriors of Chaos: Demon Prince of Tzeech. Ward3+, Re-roll power dice, wings, other stuff? Tzeech. Level 2 Wizard Tzeech. Level 2 Wizard Named character Furgil(?) (One of the level 2 wizards had a magic item that gave +1 to cast within 1” of the bearer). Therefore two of his wizards had +2 to their casting rolls! Chaos Warriors (20) Full cmd, nurgle mark, frenzy banner. (All wizards in here) Chaos Hounds (5) Chaos Hounds (5) Marauders (20) Full cmd, Great weapons Marauders (20) Full cmd, Great weapons Chaos Knights (5) Standard, Champion Expecting to rule the magic phase I was in for a rude shock, the chaos lore’s are brutal and relatively cheap to cast. One of his spells caused my mages to miscast on any double! Him having +2 to his casting roll did not help either. I needed to kill those level 2 wizards in the big block of warriors. Sent in the EOG, who took a flank charge from the warriors. EOG took half wounds, following turn flanked his warriors with Steg and temple guards. Ran them down. This was turn 4, the flying skink priest got fried in turn 2, skink priest on EOG got butchered by warriors. So it was Slann against big flying beastie demon prince. And I got out magic by the brute. Demon Prince managed to kill the EOG in the last turn. Ended up: Slann, bane head, becalming cogitation, focus of mystery, focused rumination Temple Guard (13) Full cmd Skink skirmishers (4) Salamander, extra handler Stegadon Cold One Cavalry (5) Standard, Champion, Huanchi’s Blessed Totem He had: Demon Prince Chaos Knights Marauder(1) I also claimed a table quarter and a banner. Solid Victory to the cold blooded ones. Conclusion: Chaos magic is nasty, nastier than what I could muster and I went very magic heavy I feel. Double Steg. approach has worked better. Still can’t deal with big flying beasties.
that sounds like it was an exciting battle!! good job on the win! your magic defense seemed to be good (7 dispel dice?). not too bad vs 10 power dice if im not mistaken. i havent much experience vs nasty flyers, but if you are able to distract and eventually neutralize their presence that normally works. also, the blade of realities or blood statuette of spite are both really nasty against most flyers.
