If you like magic and big monsters and combined armed (Skinks and Saurus have opposite strengths and weaknesses so are best used in tandem) approaches to game play than Lizardmen are a fun army to play.
Shopping List:
-It is almost impossible to have too many Skinks
-You want a few Saurus blocks
-You'll eventually want a Slann and/or Carnosaur.
Other than that it's hard to pick wrong. You don't want TOO many Saurus Cavalry models and the Trogolodon is widely considered the booby prize of our army book.
There aren't a whole lot of must haves, I would start with
Cangeheim's review and then check out the ratings on the
8e LM handbook.
The Tactica Index is a good place to poke around for insight on specific models, builds or strategies.
My general philosophy is to make picking models that look cool my primary consideration and models that play well my secondary consideration.
