Actually got something painted. The Temple Guard is waiting for their turn, but I wanted to do something small first, so painted High Queen Khalida from Tomb Kings. This is a nice model that has been waiting for her turn for about two years now. It was a real pleasure to paint, I especially enjoyed the cape, as I need more practice in highlighting, and cape-like things are good for that. The high and low points are rather easy to see, compared to more roundish shapes. Too bad I don't have many caped figures in my armies...

Few notes. The orange is the army colour. Core soldiers have lots of orange bits (shields, chariots etc...). The purple is the colour of elite or royalty. All the characters have something purple, and some elite soldiers, like the Tomb Guard, as well. Lastly, her belt has green and yellow stones. These are the colours of "the old dynasty". I painted Apophas wearing these colours, as I imagined him being ages older than my Tomb Kings dynasty, and not really part of it. The belt Khalida is wearing is an artefact from that time. The cape is blue because... well, I really wanted to paint something blue... Yeah.

As always, comments and critique are welcome.

Looks pretty good; but you really need to base it. The photo looks a lot like what I do, take pictures in a too dark of room, lit from the side by a single desk lamp.
Better lighting would do wonders for the photos.

Thanks, Lizardmatt. I'm stubborn about this basing thing. I started my TKs without any intention to base them, but by the time I already had a nice sized army, I started thinking about it. This was around the time I got my first Lizardmen models, so I decided that the Tomb Kings will be unbased and I'll do my best with the Lizzies. So not to set this model apart from all the rest, I'll leave them all unbased. Period. And yeah, the lighting is always a problem. I use all the lights I have (the ceiling light and two table lamps, one of which has LEDs. I also bought a third one, that is supposed to be powerful, but was such a horrible piece of crap, that I returned it), but it's still not enough. I also only have my phone's camera, which is ok, but far from best. I'm currently looking for a bigger apartment (the current one is a small studio, having room to paint and store miniatures is a drag), so if/when I find a suitable place, putting my painting station in new order is high on the list. Right after getting a new couch... So, hopefully soon the lighting thing will be dealt with!

Man, that's great. Love how the staff turns into a real snake at the top. Good job on the face too. I've seen lots of people paint right over that crack in her mask, haha. Excellent depth on her too.

My only critique would be her wraps being a little too close to the same color/shininess as her gold parts. I'm betting that that's mainly from the lighting though.

Thank you for the compliments, Qupakoco! Yeah, I see what you mean with the bandages. The lighting makes it worse, but also in real life, the colours are a bit too close to each others. Maybe I could go over it one more time with Bleached Bone. I just used the same method I use for the Tomb Guard, who have lots of bone parts showing, so I try to deviate that colour, but as Khalida is more... fleshy, it shouldn't be a problem.

Sorry for the late reply, I was visiting relatives for a week.

Well, Khemrian's just love their bling, eh? I actually agree with you, even though there is more variance to the gold colours that my old camera phone couldn't catch. At first I was thinking of doing varied colours like with her head dress, but I just couldn't get the colours right. Now that I think about it, I should have at least painted the big scarab on her chest a bit differently... Oh, well.

Did you get any basing done on this one?
    :)

I'm late to the party, not even fashionably late.

I agree, it's all 'bout the 'base, 'bout the base, no arrow!

Sorry, guys, like I said earlier, I'm not going to base my Tomb Kings. Or at least they are far behind my Lizardmen and Necrons. I have Stubborn USR.

When funds allow it I'm debating picking up Tomb Kings as a second army. I almost picked them up as my first to be honest but chose Lizardmen because I think they're WAY cooler, plus there's already someone in my group of players that has a Tomb Kings army, even though he hardly plays with us lately.

Nice work on your Khalida though, my only critique here is that like what others have said her wrappings are painted very closely to the gold motif. That could be due to the lighting though but otherwise really great work. Is that the old metal model or the new resin one?
