8th Ed. How do Oldbloods/scar vets match up?

I've been running a Scar-Vet on foot with Sword of Battle (+1 attack), or Great Weapon and Armour of Destiny, in a big unit of Saurus Warriors recently, just to give it a bit of extra punch.
Hot damn he's tough. Highly recommended.

I have had some success with a 499 point hero only death star. This consists of 4 scar-vets with GW and light armour on Cold Ones. As standard this comes to 464 points, the remaining 35 points go toward some of the most cost effective magic items. One SC gets the dragonhelm luckstone and venom to get a re-roll on 1+ AS, another gets the charmed shield and iron curse icon to discount first hit and give unit 6+ ward v warmachines, the other 2 just have their standard 2+ AS and 4 Str 7 attacks.
Scar-Vets are boss. I run mine with Greatweapon, Dragonhelm, Firefly Frog Venom, and Amulet of Itzl. This is a very potent force on the Battlefield. A less tooled up Scar-Vet cam go toe-to-toe with just about every other combat hero, and a good number of lords as well. Though will fall, albeit slowly, to a better kitted Lord.

But mainly I run Scar Vets on Cold ones to give them 1+ sv and bigger M value.
Personally I think that scar vets are the best Infantry heros in the game.

Of course I run them Solo, Cold One Cav is a waste of points and Special %. If I run them on CO Than one has charmed shield and the other Amulet of Itzl (and the thirs one has AoD). So If the want to waste 2 canon shoots on the than be my guest. Besiedes there are terrain obstacles, obelists and other stuff, tha you can block LoS from. a Cold one is not a Ste you know

I've been considering running lone Scar-Vets on Cold Ones, but the Stupidity rules kinda dissuaded me from doing it. How do they compare (in singles or in mini-Deathstar), to just teleporting the Scar-Vet using 'Steed of Shadows'? We have both Shadow Slann and the Jaguar Totem for doing that.
In answer to OP, our characters are tough and hard hitting, but we lack speed. I4 is pretty meh for a combat Lord, I3 on Scar-Vets means Hornet Sword or ASF generic sword is a pretty compelling buy. So, expect other combat heroes to go first usually, but provided we survive both the Old-Blood and Scar-Vet dish out a lot of death and they're not bad for their investment.
The Old-Blood comes slightly undone due to more macro reasons. Slann are just a better investment, we need magic support and artillery far more than just another hacky character (our army is pretty combat focused already, shooting and magic are what we lack without Slann).

Basically the FAQ on Horned One has changed alot from what I've seen in past versions. I've seen players raising questions about if it counts towards Magic Item Points or just a Unique Mount Choice. I don't know how GW gets away with alot of the VAGUE wording in their FAQs, it just causes arguments and different interpretations.
You would think they would say something like "The Horned One is only a Cavalry Mount but still must be bought from the Magic Items List." or "The Horned One is a Unique Cavalry Mount that is not a Magic Item"
The FAQ question wording of "Does it count as a Magic Item or Special Cavalry Mount FOR RULES PURPOSES" is just so confusing, so just what the hell is that supposed to mean?
Is it a magic item? You kind of just said it wasn't?

Does a Horned One have Magic Attacks? It's a Magical Mount thing...sort of.
Do I buy it with Magic Item Points?
What happens if I have bought a Horned One with magic item points and have a Cold One Also... Does it fuse become a become some new future hybrid of perfect raptor mounts?(Joke... Heh..)
I mean in the question they ask if it's a "SPECIAL TYPE OF CAVALRY MOUNT" then they just say... "It's a CAVALRY MOUNT" Super Vague...
The FAQ was originally just to prevent it from being Destroyed by spells like Vaul's Unmaking, in old FAQs Vaul's Unmaking would turn it into a Normal Stupid Cold One.
In my play group they allow me to run it as the Unique Mount Choice, still costs 35 points though and only one is allowed in my army.
I don't know. Questions have seem to always been raised about it.
I also found this fun phrase in my research!

It seems the odds are in favor of it still taking up magic item slots to alot of people (Probably non-lizardmen players). But my friends are cool with it.

I would not take the Horned one at all, just to avoid that particular problem.
On another note, I think it would be cool to be able to upgrade a unit of cold one cavalry to horned ones. Maybe make it a character or hero ability when they join the unit, to represent the training of the character/hero.

@Ari, Horend one Calvalery?? Awesome idea, but It would be very funny to see mounts attacking before raiders
To be serious, frankly I think that the ubgrade is not worth the points.
And the FaQ says it clear that it is a mount, not a magic item.

Im not sure if its not clear or you are just misinterpreting the rule and FAQ.
I think we would see it more around in tournaments as a viable build if it didnt count towards your magic item allowance. If it was meant to be played the way you want it to surely it would have been an item amendment?
eg. Pg108 Horned one is instead a normal mount option for oldblood/scarvet/chief/priest, this mount does not count towards magic item allowance and does not take up a item slot.
I dont think we will get horned one cav as its more of a step backwards, i like the two extremes of cav in the LM list, both suited to thier prespective roles.
I think it would be more likely to see a baby steg monstrous cav unit, not that i would want it.
