I have played about 5 times in a battle of 1000-1300 points against night goblins and have been destroyed every time. Any ideas? Mazdamundi
I agree. Salamanders and throw away units like rank/file skinks to bring out their finatics. Once the finatics are launched shoot them down with skink skirmishers and hit them on the flank w/ small cohort units and cavalry.
Awwww here I was thinking I was going to be all cool coming in with my answer and two people already put it in Take some salamanders!! Cause panic tests and against a horde army the templates will really really hurt! Even if you miss the shot its still going to run into SOMETHING of theirs! And on top of that for a hero choice try a Priest and in the Lore of Heaven's you can use the spell Iceshard Blizzard (which is the signature spell so you can ALWAYS have it ) and it will Hex your opponents unit to have -1 to hit modifiers and a -1 to their already low Leadership! What kind of army is he running? F.e.: how many characters, how large are the units (or how many units does he have), and what kind of units..
don't forget that you can have 25% pts in your lord + another 25% in heroes. that will allow you to take 1 oldblood and 2 skink priests, or 1 chief and 1 priest - there are many options. if you take 2 priests, both L2 and the plaque of Tepok with 1 of them, you are getting 5 spells from the lore of heavens (i.e. you will only miss 1 and it is almost sure to you will be able to choose, which 1 you will not have, as now you can't have any spells twice in the army (except the signature spell) and if you roll what you already have, you don't have to reroll, you rather choose which 1 you want). this can even work well with 1 priest being L1. just go and grab that chain lightning BTW the cheap Windblast works against hordes as well, you just have to position the priest carefully.
Taking multiple low level wizards would be a great suggestion but I recommend spending as few points in characters as you can in low point games. The small and small a game size is the more your troops count for something. Where you can afford to lose units in larger games in 1K games it really hurts to have even a unit of skink skirmishers die off. Now since your going against a horde army like night gobblins you definately need to have as many troops as you can pile in. I'd suggest a cheap scar vet for your general and a priest w/ diadem and blood statuette. This lets you be magic defensive (granted you won't have a very offensive magic phase but it's what you pay) and gobblins have average toughness and at 1K level likely won't have great ward saves. You can kill off his general in the first turn if your lucky!
This is a very easy question. The best way I've found to neuter night gobbos is by using chameleon skinks. Two tiny 5-skink throw-away units can scout in on the gobbo's flank, then pull all his fanatics out on your opponent's side of the board. Try to position the skinks so the O&G player would have to discharge the fanatic either in front of his night gobbos, behind them, or through another one of his units if he wants to hit them. After you've dealt with the fanatic problem, the night gobbos are just like any other slow-moving infantry block. Either deal with them with whatever firepower you have that'd be effective(sallies being the most obvious candidate), or outmaneuver and ignore them...while wasting the other guys.
This is what I used against Brets @ 1k and it worked pretty well, well enough to pull a massacre. 2 salamanders, 2x 11 skirmishers, 14 skirmishers, 5 CoC, Priest, Old Blood. Swarm and take down a unit with skinks (i.e. the 14 block and an 11 block double tap w/50 shots), 3rd skirmisher harasses and character/mage hunts. Salamanders get as many enemy blocks to run as possible. Have your skinks flee a charge so your cav get the flank and presto, game. Pretty standard tactic. The problem is with no ranked unts, you are relying heavily on bait and flee to get that flank. Cav can take gobos in the front, but if they have nets it's going to get real rough.
Thanks guys for the tips I took 2 sallies and wasted his 40 strong block of night gobbo's (they ran right off the board) This game was a lot closer- it came down to a giant and Skarsnik vs my Slann,Stegadon and 5 Saurus- He still won though... Skarsnik ripped my slann apart with his magic weapon and killing blow, The Stegadon got charged by the giant, the giant lost 3 wound and killed my Stegadon then went on to charge and kill my Saurus. It was a good game though. Mazdamundi
I'd say in a smaller point battle try not to use a larger points cost model like the Slann in order to get more rank and file troops or even some Skink Skirmishers. Giants are nasty but those poison darts auto wounding on 6's and you can cause two shots per Skink works wonders against those big oafs!
