I am interested in getting some info: How good is the Slann? more specifically in end times magic, as it seems that will be the rules we will play with were I play. Spolier alert if one have not read Thanquol: Will it be worth byuing a Slann? I fear they might be gone from 9th. given they all either left or died.
Well, I'll tell you exactly how good the Slann is... The Slann is pretty good. In ET Magic, the Slann is really good. The Loremaster High Magic Slann is like WOOOAAAHHH good.
This is another good question. How does the WD Slann truly stack up? Allow me a thorough explanation: With ET Magic, you really can't go wrong taking a WD or FoM Slann. Just make sure that your list reflects their spell selection, that they're protected, etc. etc.
The consensus from a discussion of optimizing ET magic seems to favor Focus of Mystery over Wandering Deliberations by a slim but real margin. Both will dominate most other side's wizards. I'd give the link a look. FOM has slightly less flexibility you have with WD, but you can use Drain Magic and Deadlock to give you some anti-magic options that work in a setting where many spells are not able to be dispelled normally. That being said, Slann might not be useable in 9th edition which is likely to come this Spring . If half the common rumors are true I'm going to play Oldhammer.
Wandering deliberation slann is probably the only model on the entire game with ALL BRB spells and all the new additional spells that got added to the existing lores. At least That's my understanding. So in other words very good. Ridiculously good tbh. You can still add the various disciplines and with how repeated casting of the same spell is now a thing rerolling failed dispel attempts is even more essential.
High Elf Lore Masters of Hoeth receive every signature spell. They are only level two and they cannot take disciplines. They have a statline identical to Swordmaster except they have 2 wounds like most Heroes. Slann are still better, but Loremasters are probably the next best thing.
But isn't the issue that the high elf one doesn't get the new additional spells due to being Lvl 2? I seem to remember at bat rep with MiMiniwargaming where they talked about it.
You are correct. I don't think Scalenex read that part of your statement. The exception would be Teclis (assuming no rule changes in ET:A) although he cannot possibly learn all 9 basic lores. The only one that can do so is the FoM Slann. Although you'll have to check with your group to see what the consensus on the lore of Undeath is. If they consider it part of the "8 lores of battle magic presented in WHFB rulebook" and not "an additional lore that all wizards can choose" then the WD Slann can also have all 9 lores. Also make sure you check what the consensus is on what a failed casting attempt is. Some groups consider a successful dispel as making the casting attempt fail. It changes what you can do with FoM versus WD rather drastically.
A literal reading of the rules disqualifies a WD Slann taking Undeath. Given how potent WD Slann are already, I believe that you will look bad in front of your gaming group if you ask for more. The rules are too clear to debate that either way. Whether or not a dispelled casting is successful does have some wiggle room. Sadly GW is probably never going to FAQ it.
Oh I totally agree on the Undeath thing. I've seen some people online argue about it and I wouldn't be surprised if there are some groups out there doing this. Hence why I said to double check. It's also part of why I consider the FoM Slann far and away better than the WD Slann. But as with spam casting the equation can change depending on how your group house rules these.
