I am decently new to warhammer and am sitting on 160 saurus warriors . I have been running two 40 blocks for 3k. Is it better to run one 40 and then 2 smaller groups.
I would definately say that 160 is plenty, so you do not need any new ones. As to the number you should run, only you can figure that out. I usually run around 40-48 recently. I have begun building my slann or a scar-vet with the crown of command and bunkering the slann in that huge unit. Then I round that out using skrox units for flanking units. Two units of 40 is plenty for almost any size game (above 2500).
as an example, i run 20 blocks of 20 plus 20 TG in a 2400p army (though i have life magic). 160 sounds like way too many to me, but 2 units of 40 (plus some TG for the slann) isnt wrong at all.
Wow! That is alot of TG at 2500 points. With full command, a magic banner, and a 25 point magic item you are toping out at around 800-850 points without the slann. Drop the slann in and you are looking at almost half your army in that unit. I would not run it that way, but I be that is a tough unit to kill.
I had a very similar questions a while back. 25-30 Saurus to me seems pretty optimal, Can take some warmachine damage and still be viable onces the blocks clash. When your running 40 your running 10 wide I assume?
At 2.5k and 3k, you should have the same numbers of both Core is 2x 20-strong blocks of Saurus with banner+musician Special is 2x 24 or 25-strong blocks of TG with banner+musician (depends on whether you have hidden Scar-Vets as bodyguards in the front rank, if not then 25) In SoM at 3k I'd bump up the TG blocks to be 34/35 strong and drop out all the Salamanders you'd otherwise field with those points (anti-infantry flame blasts stops mattering when there are spells that literally end half your opponents army on tap)

My minimum unit size is 25 these days, as I like having the extra five wounds before losing a rank. Only ran a horde once and I crapped the bed with it, but I'm keen to give it another go. With TG, 20 has always seemed okay for me, but I may bump them up to 26 next game because they could use the extra survivability if I fail to support them well.
I play dwarfs a lot. That put me in the habit of fieilding my Saurus in blocks of 30. I can expect to lose 7-8 from each block by the time I get to combat. I usually aim to field 26 Temple Guard, but these days I'm fielding my Slann sans Temple Guard more often than not. The habbit has carried over to playing non-dwarves. I do find it comforting to play with very large blocks of Saurus regardless of my opponent. I'd also point out that if you aren't taking a defensive lore such as Light or Life for your Slann (or are going Slann-less) one should consider adding more Saurus than you would otherwise do. If you are taking spears (a controversial move I know), taking an extra rank of Saurus is usually a good idea as well. Not only do you need to keep the third rank longer to get the extra attacks but you get no ward saves so your Sauri well die faster. In short Saurus quantities need to be tailored to what you plan to do with them. Same as every other thing we spend points on.
