How to tell if someone is online.

Would it be woth having a little notification when you access the website telling you who is online (who you chat to a lot/reply to a lot/follow)? It is a bit depressing when you flick through all the forums to try to find someone online and noone is there.

You have that on the forum start page

Maybe just a pop-out box on the side saying "so-and-so is online now" or something.

Yes, it´s on the home page under your profile picture. It´s says members online now, and you have registered people, visitors and robots, and it even tells you if the people you follow are online

my favorite thing about it is, if you click onsomeone's user name, it shows what they are viewing.
