I live in colorado and over the summer we lost our GW and so i have been playing at a local shop. There is a guy who plays there who is incredibly good at dark elves and i have no idea how to beat him. Can u guys help me out with an army list and just tactics to beat dark elves? Thanks, -Thomas
First, what kind of list does he tend to play? The more of his units you can remember the better. Second, what kind of list do you plan to run? Magic or combat?
well he usually runs all combat with dual hydras and a very mean black guard unit with always strikes first. He usually ahs two units of harpies and crossbowmen as well oh and cold one knights sometimes he has a dragon and a manticore i like combat becasue lizardmen are superior to dark elves in this field
Since said victim plays Elves, id recommend salamanders, very easy to cause panic and get a fair amount of kills (in theory). Also Hydras lose both armor save and regeneration when spat at, so if you actually manage to roll a 6 and woun.. Thats atleast decent all in all hehe. Plus you can easily hit the hydra tamers, kill one and they could be in for a treat. Kill two
So you prefer a close combat army when facing a dragon, manticore and hydras...I'd say Oldblood with Blade of Realities is the weapon of choice. He is sure to drop every single monster in the game and if also equipped with the charm of the jaguar warrior, his manouvrebility makes him a real bitch to fight.
Yeah definitely do not leave the blade of realities at home against that list, it will chew every big monster on the field. Make sure your old blood can move fast, either with a carnosaur or cold one, so he can get to them easier and mush them.
Black guard unit generally supported by Couldron of blood and couldron make it more deadly... Nike Saurus can be hunt couldron (Jaguar warrior, Ench. Shield, Light armour and Great Weapon)... Salamander can made great damage on black guard unit maybe 2 units of 2 salamander do the job... Usualy Black guard units champion gets Cursed Ring of Hotek... its make your Slann nearly non effective... Old blood with Carnosour is more effective choice againts that kind Darkelf builds... but dont forget his lord in the black guard unit generally has 2+ AS and reverse ward save item and AP Great weapon... use your champion to duel him or he kills your hero or old blood in the unit... good luck...
if you post your list we can give you more strategies, as we are not sure about what units you have...
If lizardmen are superior in CC then why are you losing? If you want to beat the manti, try som heavy shooting. Not sure about the dragon though. You could try shooting. But generally, a beefed-up dreadlord on a black dragon will make a mess of most things.
I don't know about using the oldblood.. If he has a dragon and a manticore.. he has 20" charge.. and can easily charge your oldblood and kill him on the charge.. Lizardmen are not really that superiour in CC toward elves. Sure we have a S and T higher.. They have ItP and Stubborn black guards... that don't need a slann in the unit... 50% chance they have the banner of hagh grief giving them ASF.. And if you get witch elfs in CC you are dead before you even did anything.. So... And don't underestimate the spearmen or executionors... they probably hide an assasin wich has ASF and kills 5-6 Saurus before we can hit... So if I were you I would not go close combat.. DE with lots of blocks are very very veryyyyy hard to beat... the hatred is just to get sick off... Only way to beat this is get Stegadons and kill the first ranks of the elves by impact hits and then kill rest with normal atttacks to get combat resolution... Shoot the witch elfs to death and ignore the black guards... You need to kill every last man in the black guard unit.. and those are so hard... Reroll hits and wounds.. or reroll hits twice.. i don't know.. something to do with the elite fighter rule or something. Don't know about other people but I'ld use a slann.. I've had much much more succes with the slann vs the Dark Elves than with an oldblood.. he just always gets challanged and killed by assasins or just gets killed by magic.... I'll think it over and try get some idea's in how to deal with every dark elf unit.
You are right about close combat... but generally that black guard unit has ring of Hotek (any doubles misscast) and the main infatary blocks going near the ring and supported by couldron of blood... ring of hotek means 1/6 change of misscast even only use 2 dice to cast spell... In avarage you miss cast minimum 3 or 4 times per game... may be Soul of Stone can be usefull to counter (or semi counter) the ring... My last match I lose 10 Temple guard in misscast... (all frendly units base to base contact with the mage suffer 1 s6 no AS hit) it hurts too much... The main close combat trouble is characters (Assasin with manbane, Lord with AP Great weapon, 2+AS and reverse Ward save ect...) in the units. The units not so scary with out characters... IMO, when the fight againts darkelves, the first target must be Couldron of blood... it gives 5+ ward until enemy block get in close combat then give +1A... 5 wide Black guard units make 13 S4 Attack with ASF(Banner) and lord make 5 S6 Attack with AP and ASF its generaly over kill other than Temple guards witch stubborn... Salamanders makes great work on Darkelf toops like Exec. and black guards... and skink shooting...
if i remember right on the rules to the ring the wizard casting the spell has to be within 12 in of the bearer so just keep your casters back from his lines as long as possible if he isn't putting the ring on a flying mount if it is on a flyer then you know what you need to target either way you just need to concentrate you efforts on your objectives
