Hi guys, after returning to the hobby and looking into a variety of threads. I've decided I'm going to build a Saurus heavy themed list & I wanted to know if anyone has run a similar list and had success with it? My main issue is the potential that I may get outmanoeuvred but surely some beasties on the flanks and some Saurus cavalry should help alleviate this issue. I'm hoping to get a few different lists done over the next few days (then I can begin my Plog) so any help from you oldbloods would be appreciated! Thanks ^^' (p.s admins if this is better in the general discussion, please feel free to move it)
Viable? Somewhat. It's a bit difficult to do though. Saurus are good road blocks, and it's a bit of a challenge for most people to mulch through them quickly. Lore of light works well with heavy Saurus because it allows them to engage units that are better than them due to initiative bonuses. I find blocks of 30 work well. That's what I've found works.
most saurus heavy 2400 list are slann 30tg 2x30 sarus 2x10 skirmish skinks 2x solo salamander they work well, caus you have a solid army, but u can be easily outmanouverd , so us eyour skinks to redirect and make enemies get in positions u want them to be it works, its just a different play style
The best mobility for a Saurus heavy list is Scar-Vet Cowboys. They can take on skirmishers fairly easily, provide great flank charges for your Saurus blocks, and can even take out monsters on occasion. Regular CoC are good too though, maybe even better since they can deny steadfast. Just don't be using either one to take on an enemy combat unit head-on. Krox, while not Saurus, work as flankers too. They can help keep the "combat lizard" theme you are shooting for and they move pretty fast.
http://www.lustria-online.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=10105 Thats the Saurus list I have, for ideas. The good thing about Saurus heavy lists, are they're coldblooded 8, and if you're steadfast, that means you'll be there until all the lizards are dead. You're pretty much as close to being a space marine as you can get in Fantasy. Which is to say, bricks o saurus are tarpits and you can generally survive making a mistake with them
The first time I finally beat my Dwarf friend was with a no magic All Saurus list. He played a gunline (he doesn't usually play pure gunlines), but his shooting couldn't put enough of a dent in the Saurus Warriors and Cold One Cavalry so I managed to just march through a hail of crossbow bolts and cannon balls to savage his line. I guess I never thought of a list with two Salamanders and 20 Skink Skirmishers as being Saurus heavy. I thought lists with two big Saurus blocks and one big block of Temple Guard with the Slann and a modest number of support skirmishers was a Traditional list.
Thanks for the replies everyone, I'll work on my mock list later on after my job interview! I presume since I will almost certainly be using a Slaan, TG are an absolute must? I'd really like to potentially include some Krox and Sallies but something will have to give eventually! Thanks again all ^^'
Temple Guard are not required for Slann. There's a discussion on lone Slann versus (Temple Guard) bunkered Slann. http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/slann-alone-or-in-tg-thoughts.7535/ There also adherents who put Slann in regular Saurus Warrior blocks (similar to bunkered Slann) or units of Skink Skirmishers (similar to lone Slann), but most army lists will either have the Slann in a block of Temple Guard or floating around by itself. It does change the playing style. Either way, if the Slann dies you probably lost the match (not that keeping the Slann alives guarantees victory). Bunkered Slann: Make sure your Temple Guard have the support from other units and spells to make sure they are thinned out too much and make sure the spells you cat help them kill whatever they engage. If your magic phase is based around short range or area of effect spells, you should probably go with the bunker. I personally would not choose to run Life, Death, or Metal without Temple Guard. I think Light also lends itself to bunkered Slann more than lone Slann. Lone Slann: Make sure your army is mobile enough that you can keep the Slann out of harms way. For me anyway, the more skirmishers I have the more likely I am to run a lone Slann (skirmishers are pretty good at taking the heat off of lone Slann). I also am likely to run a lone Slann when I am loading up on Special and don't want the Temple Guard taking up those points. I think Shadow lends itself strongly to lone Slann because a bunkered Slann can't use the lore attribute or use Steed of Shadows on himself. Some people feel differently but when I take a lone Slann I make a Scar Veteran a BSB rather than the Slann so he doesn't autodie if broken (not that my lone Slann get charged much, I'm just paranoid). All other factors being equal, if I was planning on having lots of Sauri and a Slann, I figure I'll swap one of my Saurus Warrior blocks for Tempel Guard.
Thanks for the fantastic replies everyone, I really appreciate it;- Quite alot of information to mull over. I'm going to continue working on my list(s) today and then when I'm happy with the list and my models have I can begin my Plog and hopefully improve all round at the hobby Wayne
