Hello I would like to try out a large unit of skinks in one of my games, say 50 or 60 with FC [for fun] I figured in order that they dont run away i would throw in a skink chief with the Crown of Command. With only 15 points left for magic items, what else would you give him? Also I thought about the Skaven Banner but if I recall, that rampage ability means they have to engage the next enemy unit if possible. I dont want to do that so that I could use the stand and shoot ability (avoid cc as long as possible) Thoughts?
Chief can't take a magic banner if he takes magic items so either you do one or the other. Really though your chief shouldn't need the crown since the point behind a big horde of skinks is to try and have more ranks than your opponent giving you steadfast anyway. I haven't tried a skink horde though so try it out and see what happens.
In large games (3k+), I like to run a huge unit of skink cohorts with Kroxigors and put 2 or 3 skink chiefs in there with different builds. It makes the unit fun to play. I usually shoot for at least 55 skinks and 3 Kroxigors.
With a big unit of Skinks like that you are counting on being Steadfast, if you keep your Slann close behind them you are testing on his LD9. Plus if you have a Life Slann you can buff them +4 Tough and watch them go toe to toe with just about anyone.
Thanks for the views so far. I was thinking about throwing in a unit like this in a game of 1500 pts. It is still very managable point wise if I leave out Kroxigors but still large enough that it cannot be ignored, expecially with M 6 I forgot about Steadfast. Thanks
One fun build/trick is to give a chief a Staff of the Lost Sun. By firing that first in Shooting or stand and shoot you can negate regeneration if you wound with it due to its fiery attacks. That frees up your javelins to poison and have it be far more affective. With three attacks BS 5 and good strength I have been quite happy with its effectiveness. Then again I face Hydras, HPA, Trolls and lore of life on an alarming basis so your mileage will very.
Also remember that you can get most of the benefits of a skrox unit in a large unit of skinks by taking only one krox to your 40 or 50 skinks. You gain his leadership etc. while he displaces only 2 skinks able to fight, and he can't be targetted by shooting or in close combat so he cannot die until virtually all the skinks are dead except by the uber spells.
