As 8ed is new to me. I find this VERY confusing, do a block of skinks have 180 degree sight? Or should i watch from their eyes? Do a singel modell as a priest have 360 degree sight or from his eyes? And will it matter if i mod him to get more or less sight? This rule (or lack of) makes games less fun when it easily can be arguble cases. What is your experience?
The 8th Ed. LOS rules were annoying to get used to when the 8th Ed. came out, but now it's just 2nd nature (and its not nearly as bad of a change as first feared). Skirmishers have a formation now and no longer have 360 degree LOS. 360 degree LOS is basically gone from the game. Front arc is where LOS is now determined. Basically if you try to look from the eye level of the model in his frontal arc you can easily tell what he can see (and whether it has cover or not...if that matters). Modifying your model to be taller or shorter will matter for determining this. However, if you modify your skink priest so he can see enemy units from behind your saurus unit, then the enemy can likewise see your skink priest behind the saurus unit. It'll act as a double-edged sword, so it's fair either way (I wouldn't go crazy on modifications, you still have to 'justify' why your model is modified a certain way...you can't have a skink chief on foot that is 6" above the table surface, unless he had the Cloak of Feathers and is not currently in a unit, he'll have to land on the ground to be part of a Skink unit for LOS purposes.) I haven't found any arguable cases concerning LOS other than determining whether an enemy lies within the frontal arc or not...and that issue also existed in the 7th Edition. I think the rule really fits in the game well and hasn't been an issue at all (for me) when playing in the 8th Ed. What issues are you repeatedly having with the rule?
All i can read is from page 10 rulebook is that LOS is basicly just a line from the models eyes to the enemy. I cant find any reference to frontal arcs. basicly this means that a skink has about 300 degree LOS.. while a human has around 110 degree LOS. good to have eyes on sides of the head then. though not sure if it makes any difference.
I cant decide if this was serious or a joke. LOS is purely front arc ( 360 in buildings and on fulcrums)or else a chariot would have 360 due to the crew being able to turn round and flyers would too as they are looking down. Numptys.
how come los is purely front arc? your examples just illustrate that 360 los indeed would be more realistic
It was my understanding that Line of sight was 360 but targeting rules apply for different things for example shooting, charging and magic. Also see the magic table in the BRB which categorises what types of spells have which restrictions where there are some that require line of sight but that don't have to be targeted at something in the models front arc.
Technically Line of Sight is not purely front arc, but in most cases where you would need Line of Sight the BRB also specifies that you need front arc as well. And sometimes with magic you might need forward arc but NOT Line of Sight. Charging: BRB Pg 16: "one or more of the models in your unit must be able to trace a line of sight to the enemy unit, and the target must lie at least partially within the charging unit's front arc" Shooting: BRB Pg 39: ".. the target must lie at least partially within the shooting models forward arc ... secondly, the shooting model must be able to trace a line of sight to the target" Magicing: BRB Pg 31: "unless otherwise stated: target must lie withing Wizards forward arc, Wizard does NOT need line of sight..." Note: depending on the spell type (Magic Missile, Direct Damage, etc) the front arc/Line of Sight requirements can change.
I think the biggest issue with true line of sight is when you and your opponent disagree. "My mage can see your mage" "No, can't, the tree ks in the way" "No it's not" and so forth. Not to mention cover or not cover...
my point exactly : P LOS is however the models eyes vs enemy model happen to be. frontal arc etc what you hctambien mentioned are usually the things that limit how the game is played (ofc LOS can limit things as well but LOS is not just 90degrees front) anywho..
