Hi guys, I'm brand new here, and was wondering if i could get some advice on lizzies! I'm primarily a Tyranid 40k player, but am branching over into Fantasy, i read the lore in the rule book on lizard men and instantly decided they were the race for me, skaven coming at a close second. Anyway, i've bought a battleforce and a steg. so i can use Skink Priest EOTG to be my hero? I am completely at a loss as to what is a good army in fantasy having never played it and wether i need to field cavalry, lots of troops or lots of stegs. So i guess my question is, whats an average fantasy game points wise? (i consider 40k to be 1500), and what should i build upon/loose from what i already have?
Welcome to the game. First to answer your question, the average game of Fantasy is around 2000 - 2250 pts so you can take a lord in your army. As a beginner it might be better to start off at lower points, like 1000pts and build up from there once you have a handle on how each unit works inside the army. You can use the EotG as your hero, but it is very expensive for a smaller point game. If you have the extra bases, you can make the priest (and Skink Chief) removable from the Stegadon which allows you to run a priest on foot in smaller point games. I recommend either buying or converting a Scar-vet for a general. The Scar-vet is a good killy hero, that serves as a good general because of his higher leadership. One of the good things about Lizardmen is that you can make almost any type of army and it's still effective. The real trick to starting the army is playing some small games and get a feel what each unit can do and what works best for you. I am rather new myself (come from mostly playing Orks in 40k), and that was my two cents. Some of the more veteran players can probably give you more advise, but I hope this wasn't too far off base. I hope this help you, and good luck.
thanks for the advice, it helps alot. The guy at GW who said he plays Lizardmen said the steg with EOTG was a good HQ choice to start with, or maybe he was just trying to make a bigger sale! I think ill try get a scar vet, everyone seems to be talking about him quite alot on these forums.
The Engine of the Gods is an excellent choice, and sooner or later you *will* want to have one for your army. I think it was a very safe purchase. It's versatile and helps out a bunch in both magic light and magic heavy armies. And while stegadons arent quite as beastly powerful as before (curse you FAQ!) they are still excellent excellent monsters. And so very cool to paint and field. What's the point in playing if you dont look awesome doing it? Also, purchasing a Stegadon gives you any of the Stegadon choices... normal, Ancient or Engine of the Gods. I'm personally a big fan of magnets, so I only have to buy 1 model and just slap on whatever weapons I choose. Scar Vet is also a very very solid choice. They are cheap and excellent characters. Even when you have another character leading your army, you'll want to toss in one or even two Scar Vets for their potency. As Curly One said, you can also use the Skink Chief and Skink Priest as characters even without the Stegadon. Take two of the bases from your Skinks and put the Chief and Priest on them. You'll want a Skink Priest in almost every single army (even if it is just to carry around Dispel Scrolls). And if you want to field one of them on your Stegadon, you can just toss them in the Howda. One of the major things to remember when moving from 40k to Fantasy is the magic phase. Even if you dont want to use a whole bunch of magic, you need to have some magic countering built into your army. As mentioned above, a Skink Priest with some dispel scrolls will do the trick in small games. You'll need more than that in a normal 2000 or 2250 point game however.
wow, thanks for the info! , i magnatize all my carnifexes and am actually half way through planning where and how to insert magnets into my steg, he's an awesome model, hopefully my paint job will do it justice when i do. Scar Vet seems like my next purchase then. I want a slann and want to base my army quite heavily around magic as its a big thing that makes fantasy different from 40k and also the slann are the magical kings! (or so i've read) Lord Kroak is bad ass ay?
