    Hi fellas.

I've been playing Woodelves for quite some time, and am interested in branching out to a new army. The two armies interesting me right now are Lizardmen, Tomb Kings. I've heard that these three races are suffering a little in 8th Edition, due to the new spellcasting rules. But I really like the Mayan/Aztec feel of the Lizards, the Egyptian feel of the Tomb Kings.

I would appreciate any insight to the uniqueness of the Lizardmen, why you all like playing it so much. What sets it apart from the rest? I currently play a skirmish army (very shooty), and would like a little more melee strength than the Wood Elves have to offer.

I hope you experienced players can help!

heya, I replied about the TK over on the Khemri forum figured I'd reply about lizzies on here.

Lizardmen are a very solid army this edition; they are reliable, quite killy, have a very unique fluff set. I'll go over each phase now for a good idea of what we have.

Movement - well . . . . . . we aren't the fastest army on average but we do have a highly mobile fast force, terradons flying, skink type units are all M6 and aquatice (including kroxigors, salamanders and razordons). and Cold one Cav are M7. Saurus Warriors and Temple Guard are M4 which is the "average."

Magic - POWERFUL, when a slann is present. Without the slann our magic is a bit below average but can still be effective.

Shooting - aside from the Bolt thrower on the regular stegadon, Lizards don't have long range shooting. What we do have though is massive amounts of short range poison, plus the salamanders (awesome) and razordons (really cool models and not too to bad of a unit)

Combat - all saurus units are durable and killy, kroxigors are powerful as well (especially in a skink cohort where they can't be targeted). Stegadons are powerful with impact hits and our combat characters can really bring the hurt

ummm, now what else do you want to know?

    Ha! Thanks Nova!

Well, I did not receive much feedback here (though I did receive a lot of views). I did receive TONS of amazing feedback in the TK forums almost immediately. The enthusiasm about the TK army was apparent and rubbed off on me, so I actually decided to go TK.

Seems like the forums over there are more active, or at least more responsive to questions. As a player to a new army this is important to me, to help the learning process. Plus I really like a lot of the TK minis.

I still really like the whole lizardmen aztec/mayan feel to it, and maybe I will do this for my next army.

I appreciate you posting here as well!

I figured you'd go TK, this board has been a lot less active recently but part of that is due to the book being a couple years old now and there are newer and exciting things (ie TK, which is an army I myself have just started. Making a Khalida/Lybaras army, gonna be lots of fun)

Lizards are a brilliantly fun army definitely keep them as a potential second army.

Maybe they will throw out a new book and minis in another year. I will be ready to start a new one up at that time!

For me, the army must have the initial appeal for me to want to field and test it. So, much like yourself who is into Egyptian and Mayan/Aztec themes, both these armies are very attractive to play. One of the neatest things about this hobby, though, is the ability to do modifications. For instance, having an Aztec-themed Goblin army or some of the really creative Lizardmen themes imo are the volcanic, desert, and albino armies. So, chances are, if you like the models, you can get creative and design a theme all of your own. :)

The overall combat style of TK does not interest me, though the theme itself does (I like Egyptian!). I'd much rather work with more diverse infantry and cavalry than all the war machines and magic that TK comes with (though the models themselves look sweet). So, this is why, for myself, I chose Lizardmen over TK.

Novatomato hit many good points which stand true for me as well so not much need to go on there.

Good luck on the battlefield and your TK army.

    Thanks for posting guys!

I am sure these kind of posts get annoying for many of you regulars, but things change, versions change, flavours of the month change, and because 8th edition is so new, a lot of trial and error is happening regularly. Having the latest news is always the best. Even if it is a link to another recent post! I looked around and didn't see answers to my questions, which is why I posted. :)

Maybe having a stickie for noobs showing what recommended troops to buy initially and why, and what is so special about this army, would definitely help the volume of these types of posts...

Being used to playing Wood Elves, I was looking for a lot more war machines, monsters, and formation type units to get into a different 'style' of play. I think that is another reason TK attracted me a little more. But Lizardmen also have interesting 'monster' type models which also attract me.

The idea of painting a mayan themed army really is still attractive to me, and I can really see myself getting this army next.

I don't know where you heard that, unless you meant just the TK? Slann are really flourishing under the new magic rules and Lizardmen are now regarded as one of the more powerful armies in the game.

Sorry you didn't get many replies, most threads do get replies as you see now but it does often take a couple of days. LM do have some very strong combat units, stronger than TK. I'm not too familiar with the new TK, but they do have some great models, and in 7th ed at least I found them a very fun army to play.

Either way, looks like you have made your mind up, good luck with your Tomb King army! The Lizardmen are a great army with strong magic, fast light troops, slow heavy troops, good monsters etc. and are well worth a look if you do decide you want another army after your TK!
