So I just got home from a quite large game. We had 1500 points each, so 1500 ocs, 1500 lizard and so on.

I'm sad to say the orcs and I were completely destroyed, absolutely devastated. I was rolling very bad, managed to snakes eyes in my first magic phase, leaving me with three power dice for slann.

The other team were fantastically organised, managing to plow a hydra and a hellpit into my unit of saurus warriors, and then into the slann unit behind them.
Due to this being my third game, with an incomplete army, I felt I did OK. Managed to burn a few wounds out of the hydra with a salamander, and shoot some dark elves with my skirmishers.

What sort of tactics would you recommend against Skaven, I hear they're very over powered. I've never seen my scaven playing friend lose a game.

Forgive me for saying, but a salamander against a hydra? Come on, it is surely for anti-horde purposes. That or warriors of Chaos.

The key against skaven is to quickly remove the hordes. They ruin saurus' days anyday. Also, their hellpit is rather OP, what with its statline and ability to return from the dead. Remember though, if you use spells that use unmodified leadership (shadows I think although I only use life) then you can deprive them of those nasty rank bonuses. Thus flank charges (cold ones) will also come in handy.

For the dark elves, yes, the hydra is a problem, but there's not much a stegadon can't handle. Yes, I know it's only 1500 points but remove a salamander (or play a larger game) and you may find it to be really effective. It's basically a walking bolt-thrower monster of death.

Sounds like you used your skirmishers well. 20 with blowpipes can on average down a Warsphinx in a turn, my friend found out.

Sorry if this is too late, but I hope it helps.
