I am not sure if this lives here, since this battle hasn't happened yet, I am reasonably new to Warhammer and this is the first time I have met a Chaos army in the field, I have been wondering what I should expect, I can pretty much field any defensive combination, but the Codex for Warriors of Chaos is annoying, I can't find the will of Chaos special rule description anywhere, if anyone knows it, I would love to know, secondly, what should I be expecting from a large force of Chaos? and thirdly, do I actually stand a chance? this is an unbeaten army on his part, any info would be great, sorry for rambling.
    Thanks.

Just Finished the list that I will be using tomorrow, but its not finalised yet,

    Unfathomable Presence
    Focus Of Mystery

Mazdamundi (or another Slann with similar specs to first one.)

    Saurus Oldblood
    Great Weapon
    Light Armour
    Shield
    Blade Of Realities
    Venom Of The Firefly Frog

    Sauras Scar-Vet

    Light Armour
    Shield
    Plaque Of Dominion

    Saurus Scar-Vet
    Great Weapon
    Light Armour
    Shield
    Shield Of The Mirrored Pool

    Skink Priest
    Lvl 2
    EOTG
    Itix Grubs
    Blood Statuette Of Spite

May add another lord, unsure as of yet.
    Saurus Warriors X18 3 units.

    Spears

    Skink Skirmishers X10 4 units.

    Temple Guard
    Full Command
Rev. Guard - Rod Of The Storm

With this list I will have 246 points left, so possibly another Stegadon or unit of Saurus.

Sorry if this should go in the lists section now.

Lots of small list building mistakes, but the units in the list are pretty solid. The characters need some work and I would highly recommend Terradons, do not leave home without them. Other than that, it looks pretty solid. I would say go magic offensive with the amount of casters in your list, so switch the Slann build. You have a better chance of winning with the Lore of Metal against Chaos.

I will let some of the others grab some of the points I missed.

Thanks for the tips mate, its crucial that I beat him, his army is undefeated and I hope I can be the first, I haven't lost against him so far, so here's hoping :)

Chaos is no joke and to be facing them at a 4000pt lvl for your first go at them was almost a lose before you sat at the table IMO. Thats not a slight at you its just at 4k he can take everything and anyone he wants. Its a lot to take in and counter if you've never played against them before. As I've said before I learn more from a loss then a win. Take it for what its worth try not to make the same misstakes next time and march on. Thats what I do and have done when everything goes/gone wrong for me on the battle field.

    Sorry to hear you lost.

Chaos is pretty tough but nothing the LM cant handle at 4k. Our battles typically range between 5,000 and 6,000pts and I typically grind Chaos Warriors into paste. In smaller 2k to 2,500pts lizards do even better.

I am assuming you ment Chaos Warrior and not DoC.

First your saurus blocks were too small. run them 6x4 with spears for 25 attacks. 18 Saurus simply do not have the static combat resolution or size to take the casualties you will receive from blocks of warriors.

TG units should also be 25 with the slann. this unit will form the center which your saurus shield wall forms on.

Salamanders are the bane of WoC. Target priority should be the blocks of Warrior or chosen. Run 3 sally and stay 8-10 inches away when shooting. While you wound on 5+ the -3 AS . Second priority would be the knights.

Old Blood on a Carny will rip large holes in the WoC with d3 wounds, frenzy and NO AS sword. And in challanges the Carny gets to fight also.

Use units of 10 skinks to redirect and/or pull units of WoC (especially if he runs frienzied units) but he will probably run nurgal. (for the to hit modfiers)

If you run your stegadons in conjunction with your saurus blocks for the impact hits. Do not run them alone since they will lose due to SCR and test on a 6.

Cold one cavalry (in units of 6) will do well vs his maurader units and rip them up. AS2+ 19 St 5/4 attacks will eat his non WoC type infantry.

Things not to take IMO. Razordon, skirmishers, terridons (unless your stricktly going for march blocking)

Run your units of skinks out in front to redirect and your saurus blocks in a shield wall. Flanked by your cavalry kroxigor salamander units . keep your engines of the gods slightly behind your front frank of your saurus and when you are in range charge/and shock. unitil then use your engines to lower the casting values of your magic lores.

While WoC units are tough, they are so very expensive they will not have very many of them. Even at 4k points. in head on competition they are not much better then large saurus blocks with spears and cost a hell of a lot more. Add the LM support units and we have everything we need to fight that army.

If he has DoC??? well that is another story since that army can be abused beyond belief.

Thanks for the tips Batu, I have just about picked that fight clean, he was using Chaos Knights with Archaon, it pretty much ran through the flanks of each engaged unit from right to left, basically beating me on CS everytime, I think i only managed to take out four of his twenty Knights, so any tips on how to gain an upper hand against them would be sweet.

My magic throughout the game was totally disabled, he had too many dispel dice, I think I managed to fire off one or two spells, whereas I was struggling to dispel him.

The problem with his army was that it was entirely elite, and I wasn't expecting just how much each of his unit gains from CS, my Saurus blocks were being carved to pieces, as there was no return attacks due to casualties.

Also had a very bad dice run, but any other tips anyone has got would be greatly appreciated, I intend to destroy his winning streak with that army!

eotg aand salamanders are the answer for you, and magic ofcourse since there allways will be an IF here and there.
an eotg is worth 7 1/2 knights point wise and it can take out much more than that. any 4 to wound results in a dead knight with burning alignment. salamanders are also awesome even if they wound on 5's they modfy his armor to 4+ and every dead knight means he has a lot less hitting power due to the cost of those knights.
also, spirit of the forge and uranons thunderbolt are just deadly if you manage to get one off
