Tried playing against my friends bret RAF list. Aside from insane dice on his part, I never seem to win. He runs KotR, PKs (no lord), and longbows with a couple of the lower level sorceresses. What ususally happens, is he stalls out my magic phase (not much to be done about his insane luck), and then drops comets every other turn or so. KotR come in and lock up my saurus, and he's gotten into the habit of taking the banner that prevents your from making stand and shoot for the skinks. Just at a loss as to what to do. I usually run 40 saurus, a Slann, an ancient stegadon, and 40 skinks. We play roughly 2200 points. Any help would be great.
Lore of Metal is wicked against Knights. Nothing blows through KotR like the signature spell, and his paladins will fail look out sir against Golden Hounds sooner or later. It shouldn't be his knights holding up your saurus, it should be the saurus holding up the knights. Run them five wide, and perhaps make two units of 25-30. Trap knights with steadfast, then stegadon into the flank. Once their charge is over, they'll lose the advantage quickly. Skinks aren't so great against heavy cavalry- too much armor, and too quick across the board. If you need to include all the skinks to have a big enough list, use them as flankers instead of ranged support. A Scar Veteran or two with great weapon also cuts down knights pretty well. See what you can adjust in your list. Hope that helps a little.
Also, his strength is on the charge. Make him come to you. If you take a horde of skinks, he cannot hope to break them on a charge as well. Tarpit him until you can get your saurus to his lines. I have successfully used Lore of LIght against Brettonnians. Birona's time warp will ruin his day. He should not be able to dominate the magic phase with 2 lvl 2 casters. Running a slann, you should take becalming cogitation, focus of mystery, and focused rumination. You should also take a lvl 1 priest with the forbidden rode (d6 dice added to the power pool) plus a 4+ ward save vs first wound. That way, if you roll poorly on the winds of magic, you can use it to get a good magic phase.
Well, we should be having a battle today. Will switch tactics here and see what happens. Thanks for the tips guys. =)
