My regular VC opponent decided he would start a new army recently and decided to be sporting and start DoC. He came in bragging last thursday that he had built a really unfair list and I would get massacred. I was having second thoughts about playing him given how much of an unsporting (insert your own adjectives here) but I went on all the same given I'd recently composed a new army list I wanted to play test.
Lists are as follows (To the best of my memory)
Carno, OB - SwdofMight
EOTG - CuppedHands
EOTG - Disp Scroll
SV - BSB - Plaque of Dominion
2 x 18 Saurus
2 x 10 Skirmishers
(Obviously my list needs tweeking somewhat (items on OB but that's for a different thread me thinks).
His list - Keeper of Secrets - Slannesh magic
Another lv 4 Wizard, lore of beasts
Masque (Mask --?)
5 hounds
2 x 5 flamers
10 harpies
2 x 10 Horrors
15 or 20 Nurgle
I talked him into playing on a 2x2 as opposed to a normal 2x3 which he thought was just "giving me a chance" in reality it was his biggest mistake.
Terrain
Shrine - mid left, 6inches from board edge
Trees - mid right - 2 inches from board edge
I deployed my blocks in the centre with skirmishers on both flanks and the 2 EOTG's and carno on the left flank.
---------
In my first turn I bolted the blocks with the BSB straight forwards. As did the EOTG's moving on the outside of the shrine and the skirmishers moved forwards aswell. The Carno moved up aswell positioning himself behind the shrine.
Having rolled both thunderbolts on both priests they opened up taking down a few flamers.
His Turn
He moved forward slightly, his masque moved into the trees close to my blocks. The hounds opposite my engines backed off. He opened up with some very nasty magic, most of which was dispelled however a few saurus died. I used up my scroll on beast cowers.
Shooting from flamers took down 2 saurus from my non-BSB unit and 3 from my BSB unit.
My Turn (2)
The engines moved forward again to get into charge range, one positioned slightly further back so as to enable a counter charge should his hounds charge.
Saurus moved forward again and wheeled to face respective targets.
Skinks on the right moved into the woods to get nice and cosy with the masque.
Skinks on the left moved forward to position themselves between the flamers and the non-BSB block with the hopes of soaking up the shooting from that unit, then fleeing and allowing my carno to charge through the space that they once occupied.
Bolts took down some more flamers. BA took down a hound and another flamer. A miscast by ol' Blue (one of my Engines) managed to take a wound off of his Keeper (good ol' cupped hands).
No wounds from shooting at the masque.
His Turn (2)
His movement phase was brief. He moved his harpies behind my blocks. He also tried to get away with bending the movement rules and tried to place his hounds behind my engines but I was having none of that and a 5 minue discussion ensued about the true movement range of his damn cavarly and so they ended up positioned on the left of the engines to threaten a flank charge.
His shooting and magic saw me lose roughly 6 more saurus overall, mostly from my BSB unit. My skinks lost 1 of their number thus ruining my plan of charging with my OB in my next turn. My BSB unit became stupid, not a real issue from Cold-Blooded units as we all know (the reduced leadership might've been hassle though).
My Turn (3)
I lucked out and got a flank charge with ol' Blue into his unit of horrors, and ol' Red went into his flamers. My skinks moved aside for my OB. (I should've closed with my saurus blocks aswell but did not).
I cast portent with both engines (glad I'd opted for the default spell now.)
His 10 strong horrors didn't fair very well against my BA to begin with which reduced their number by 3, took a wound off the keeper which was 2inches away and took the hounds down by 1. Ol' Red took down a flamer with his BA aswell leaving 2 there. Needless to say the flamers went *pop*. The horrors also went *pop* which allowed for an overrun into the Keeper which was lined up nicely with the horrors. After much debate and calling in the manager for a rules check we established that impact hits could be taken for this overrun which subsequently saw his keeper standing at one wound. Another 20 shots against his masque and still no wounds. (poison on 6's and still nothing...)
His Turn (3)
His hounds charged into the rear of my engine engaged with the keeper. His shooting and magic saw my BSB unit fall to 11. His Keeper forced my priest against his own crew but he failed to wound any. The combined weight of the hounds and his WS9, s6, ASF Keeper toppled my Engine.
My Turn (4)
Carno charged the unit of nurgle next to his keeper. Ol' Red charged his hounds. skinks were forced to charge his keeper (siren song) they fled through my saurus blocks (panic test passed even with -3 LD penalty). BA from ol' Red took down his keeper securing me a win, red took down his remaining hounds.
Carno lost against the nurgle but held (dice failed me something awful). Skinks failed again against the masque.
His Turn (4)
He moved his masque out of the woods. Held everything else where it was. Failed his magic phase quite succesfully. Entered a challenge against my carno, I won quite succesfully even with bears anger cast on his champ, his only succesful spell. His shooting was also a dud.
---------------------
Game ended there. I was down roughly 650 VPs. He lost just over 600 in his keeper alone securing me a win.
He did not look happy after that. He did conceed that that is what he deserves for taking such a cheesy army which is darn well true. Obviously 2 engines and a carno isn't nice but it's what DoC players like him deserve.
Match analysis. I should have taken the sun standard instead of PoDom, the stupidity tests were easily passed. I also should've screened with my skinks better, flamer shooting is deadly as is their magic.
My biggest flaw here was not engaging with my saurus, I should have realised he would not charge and every turn my saurus weren't in combat was a turn wasted. Next time I shall engage ASAP and not wait.
Unit of the game - EOTG (Ol' Blue) - Flank charge on the horrors allowed me to overrun into his keeper, along with the transferred miscast meaning this unit took 4 wounds of the KoS even if it did get troucned in combat it did allow me to topple him.
