    Hi all,

I'm playing a 1500 points game soon and i was thinking of a possible slan build, my TG aren't done yet so I'm trying him solo. He can only cost 375 points so that's a little tight...
    I was thinking of this:

    Slann mage-priest
-Focused Rumination, Higher state of conciousness
-Plaque of Tepok, Divine plaque of protection
    -Lore of Life

So that's an ethereal, good wardsave, wounds restoring mage, with some protection from miscast in the form of lore of life. He comes in at 370 points so at least that part is good :) Would this setup work?

I like your build a lot! It should be very effective in a small game. Just watch out for mounted characters with magic weapons and do your best to remain out of the line of sight of other wizards bc your gonna be the target of a lot of offensive spells! Remember to get ur throne of vines off to keep u from miscasting most of the time, because if u lose ur slann its all downhill! What are you running with him? And do u know what u will be playing against?

    Thanks for your comments!
Throne of vines is the key indeed...i just hope i'll get it as I will only have 5 out of 7 spells but I should be fine.
I'm still working on my list but i'm not sure yet. I was thinking of something along the lines of this:

    Slann from the first post
Scar-vet BSB: armour of destiny, GW/gold sigil sword, armour of fortune

    20-24 saurus warriors with spears
    2x10 skink skirmishers

    6 chameleon skinks
    stegadon

    2x1 salamander

this still leaves me with some points left over... I have also though about getting a warspear steg in there instead of the SV and steg.

    cheers!

Have you thought about dropping the gear and just running rumination, higher, and mystery? comes in at 375, and it guarantees you throne of vines (which is pretty much vital to get the most out of life).

The other way you can go is the original set up and lore of beasts-- that way if worse comes to worse you can toss a few of the buffs on yourself and have a close combat Slann (always good for a laugh). If you roll transformation (which he can't use) you can trade it for wildform (which you will always want). Otherwise you get good buffs for your bsb and some decent damage spells.

I am also building a 1,5K force and took focused rumination, becalming cogitation, and a divine plaque of protection for the Slann. higher state of consc. isn't that good in my opinion, I would only consider it against armies with many non-magical warmachines and weak casters. on the other hand, becalming cogitation is very useful, when facing other wizards (which is very probable in 1,5K games)
oldblood62 says stay out of LoS, but that is not required now, as many damage spells don't need LoS anymore.
I would also reconsider the stegadon, it is really not worth it's points in 8th - you can check this post for people's opinions: http://www.lustria-online.com/threads/stegadon-is-it-worth-the-points.4833/
at the same time, I would make the saurus block a bit bigger - 29+hero proved to be fine to me in several games. As you plan to run the Slann alone, I would also include a unit to keep near him to slow down any incoming threats, while being able to run on its own, if no threat is around - a skrox unit could be good for this - I need to test that yet.

Hmm those disciplines sound intresting, but i really liked the idea of having that 2+ ward from evil ouch magic.

I took the steg because i do not have enough saurus and temple guard painted to fight for my cause :p I guess I'll give him a shot and see for my self how good/bad he is...

beast sounds funny, but one spell i cannot use and the added danger of miscasting makes me think that lore is reserved to higher point levels where cupped hands as well as mystery can be used.

being ethereal i think can be a life saver. I'm not sure what my opponents will use but it's mostly DE, WoC and O&G. The list is designed for all comers.

I guess i'll start working on my TG so i can use the points to get cupped hands and mystery instead of higher.

Keep the good ideas flowing :D

Imo, running higher state, is not as good defence as you'd get from running plaque of prot. along with a +1 MR talisman. from that you'd get 2+ ward against ranged. and 3+ ward against all those naste none-ranged tests magic can allso throw at you.

good idea! But you would lose the ethereal goodness in combat, which could be usefull against charging fast cav/flyers...

So would this be any good?

    Slann Mage-Priest: Lore of Life
    -Focused Rumination, Focus of Mystery
    -Plaque of protection, Obsidian trinket

still 370 points, 2+ ward from ranged, 3+ ward from magic, 4+ ward from the rest. All spells from lore of life and the extra dice ofcourse.

    cheers
