8th Ed. Looking for a few different solo Slann builds

I came up with this build has had a bit of success Slaan BSB , War Banner, Fencers blades,Crown of Command,Amulet of Itzel. Disc, higher state , becalming cog , and focused rumination.
Looking to see if there are other decent builds out there. for around the 3k level or less

What lore do you run on that slann? I like the idea of a WS 10 slann.

This isn't too dissimilar to how I often run a solo slann
Fencers blade, war banner, cupped hands with higher state of consciousness bsb
Lore of beasts
If you can get into a key combat and get off savage beast of horrors (and less importantly
Wyssans) you can get 5 attacks at WS10 and strength 6 (7).
This can rip through a monster or small elite unit.

Alternatively you can hold up a horde or large combat block, relying on rerollable cold blooded Ld9 until you reduce their rank bonus. Granted they will mostly be steadfast but you tie them up nicely for a flank charge
Or you can fight an opposition character, buff yourself up to T8 with WS10 and 4+ Ward, you can win challenges.
Downside is that the rest of the lore is a bit meh and you can't buff you saurus.

I have also run Solo light slanns with
Cupped hands, divine plaque and higher state,
Running around buffing where it is needed and being basically untouchable, magical ranged attacks need to beat a 2+ ward. However the downside to this build is that if you do get caught by a unit with magical attacks in close combat, you will die much quicker.

Im confused why are you up three already just by having low of light or do you mean by charging and having the warbanner bsb

Slann cannot take magical armour (like most wizards), however he can take magical weapons.
The BRB says all models have at least a hand weapon, although you could argue
army book > BRB here

However in the magical items section it states that a wizard can only take magical armour if it already has mundane armour, but no such rule exists for magical weapons. It doesn't say you must have a hand weapon (if you are claiming army book > BRB) to have a magical weapon.
The Slann used to have a rule that stated it could not take magical weapons but this was removed with the latest army book.

Nor have I ever seen it played at tournaments that anyone can't take a magical weapon

I have to disagree. Pg. 91 of the Liz book clearly says under Weapons & Armor: None If you read the fluff, the Slaan doesn't actually fight. It's one of his Skink attendants that fights. As for tournaments, I made this same mistake in my Adepticon list and had it denied. And yes, Army Book always trumps BRB.

I do see your point, it isn't clear by any means and we both just have different views.
I guess it might be a Europe/US thing if you were denied it at Adepticon because at ETC (a premier, if not the premier, European event) this was explicitly covered in their FAQ thread on another forum

Response: "Of course."

But since no set of tournament rules overrule any others and GW haven't addressed this, I guess it would be prudent to enquire beforehand with your opponent or tournament which ruleset was being followed.

Fluffwise, it could easily been understood that the skink attendant was carrying the magical weapon, Skink chiefs and priest can carry magical weapons and a Slann's attendant must be a senior skink to be allowed to attend the Slann so could easily be capable of wielding magical weapons.

Slann can fight after all mazdamundi has a magical mace so there is precedence for it.
As our rule book was written for 7th edition it creates a little quandary as the 8th book does indeed state that all chars and models have a hand weapon going as far as to say that there are plenty on the battle field, but given that throwing your slann into combat is quite a strange concept (although we all find ways of making it work) it doesnt seem to have been addressed anywhere it will always be one of those thing to address prior arriving at a tournament and in friendlies i dont think anyone will have too much of a problem with it.

there is no rule that says you have to have a mundane weapon to use a magical one. ofc slann can use fencers blades.

i personally believe that you are totally missing the point of a slann if you kit him out to FIGHT (and not just to survive combat) and on top of that use his magical abilities pretty much only to boost his combat prowess. you would be better off just buying a MUCH cheaper oldblood if you want a fighting character. he has 5 S7 attacks with mundane equipment, and if you spend the magic allowance on defense he will be harder to kill than the slann.

i DO love the idea of a solo slann with death magic and defensive kit. however, i would only consider this if he was the second slann in the army, and hence you would need a 3k+ point army to make full use of it, but the idea is solid. Spending 500 points on a slann that IF BUFFED can fight as well as a 200 point old blood (without buffs) seems a bit redundant tbh.

Yes it is completely sub-optimal and I would never run it in a tournament, but it is good for a laugh in a friendly soft environment.
The oldblood is far superior in combat but the downside is that your opponent will know this too and will shoot at it, target it with spells and block it from getting to a juicy target.
You can catch people out with a fighting slann and get some success if they don't see it coming.


The solo death slann is an interesting idea, sound very good. I haven't ever run one but I guess you are right in saying you don't want it to be your main caster which means you need 3k.

The only wizards that i know of that can't take a magic weapon is the Brtonnian Prophetess and Damsel. In their codex it says can not take magic weapon, going by that the slann can take a magic weapon.

Great builds BTW.

I love solo slann, I don't really like the 8th ed. TG.

Got to love a slann with Higer State and CoC holding up 30 White Lions.

For my next game a 3.3K vs WoC I'm taking:

Beasts Slann, Focused Rumination, Higher State, Becalming Cogitation, Crown of Command, Talisman of Endurance(MR2), Plaque of Tepok(extra spell), BSB, Standard of Discipline.

Will hopefully hold up a warriors unit with no character in it, just have to keep him away from the chaos knights. But an uber Amber spear "vassaled" though my flying priest sould sort them.
