Ok so this will probably be a very different post to the standard one. Yes I am seeking some standard advice on building a Lizardmen army from the ground up. It has been years since I've played a single game of WHFB or 40K but I used to be a pretty avid tournament player (at least on the 40K side). Anyway this time around I am seeking to build a casual very versatile army list that can be used for 6th edition games (in my gaming group we are looking to get into "Oldhammer" essentially playing casual games of whatever version of WHFB we like instead of being driven by what GW is doing right now). That said I am less interested in 8th edition right now, but perhaps when 9th is out I might come back to "mainstream" WHFB a little more. I hear they are going to be working to reduce the number of models needed to play the game ... but as we all know its really just idle internet speculation about 9th right now. So here is what I have so far: What is in the picture: is 32 skink archers (the older models, which I happen to really like) along with 50 of the newer style saurus models (with shields and hand weapons) as well as a older style pewter stegadon and a pewter carnosaur. There is something like 20 rider-less pterodactyl models, two stegadons without the crew (but the howdah is there and all the other bits) and a couple of temple guard and of course the newer style slann. So using those models what would anyone advise me to think about ... again given the parameters of possibly playing the army in both 6th and 9th edition (advice from the standpoint of 6th-8th is fine too). Thanks!
Well if you're playing 6th.... Make a Southlands list! Flip to the back of the book and check out the rules for one. You can keep your Skink Archers as archers and run a single block of Saurus with Stegs and Terradons galore! If you can get your hands on some of the old Cold One riders (ridden by skinks) you can use them as Horned Ones. That's a pretty fun army to play. Fast paced and lots of range. I think lots of us long-time players have a soft spot for Southlands lists from 6th edition. Archers got hacked in the newer editions. EDIT: I don't recall the specifics, but I think Slann are pretty limited in a Southlands list. Either way, they are arguably the best spell casters from that edition even at their lower levels. Pretty sure a 5th Generation Slann from 6th edition can whoop up on a tooled up Slann from 8th edition.
I've played since 5th and I agree that 8th is my fav, but there are definitely some safe bets for all editions. Stegs were good in all the editions and terradons are always good warmachine hunters. I dont think anyone would mind if they didn't have the riders. Your bow armed skinks could easily be skirmishers, just say if they are bows/javelins/blowpipes. Looks like you can do a couple 20-something bricks of saurus which is fine although it wouldn't hurt to make them 30ish to avoid fear-breaking for older editions or just mass for newer ones. 20 something Temple guard for your Slann are safe additions for any edition.
Thanks for the advice guys. I've managed to snag 100 more saurus warriors ... 60 of the older style and 45 of the new ones. Along with enough temple guard for a Slann defense block. At this point I just need to decide what other special/rare choices to pick up. I am not too keen on anything finecast, nor am I going to be playing this army in tournaments or anything like that. So my hope is to use cheaper (yet nice looking) models. I'm thinking for the razordon/salamander models I'll just find some appropriate reasonably priced models (tons of ranges out there). I'm thinking the same thing with the Krox, if I can find them cheaper on ebay cool ... if not I'll go with another range (something from Privateer Press or Wargods or something). Any suggestions on special/rare additions? Again given I might not be playing any 8th and will not likely be playing any tourney games with this army ... probably ever ... At that point it will be off to painting/terrain work so I can get this stuff done in time for summer gaming!
