With lore of fire I have had mixed results, ranging from crap to gold. Throwing on that spell where if they move they take a hit is pretty funny in combination with wind blast however.

I have found it very effective when you focus every attack at a single unit. The extra d3 (and the extra dice your slann gets) means most spells will go off with 2 dice (+the extra d6+d3). I also face a VC player often who uses lots of regen units so perhaps my results are skewed.

If you have access to every lore, fire isn't great. If you want to try out new lores, fire being not that good shouldn't come into the equation. Pretty much the options are, try out new lores, or stick to the good few.

All things said and done, you need to pick your lore on your army list now. High elves became better and magic heavy builds with a surplus amounts of bolt throwers are already popping up and doing well. Which means if you bring fire to a tournie, chances are your coming up against dragon armour. I think shadow, death and heavens are better options. They have good offensive spells and other nice buffs aswell.

When choosing a lore for your Slann to cast you have to keep in mind what you intend to use him as. If your thinking Lore Fire or Lore of Death your basically taking a (possible) miscasting war machine. Lore of Fire used to be the prime lore for people whom wished their mages to dish out death and destruction. Now Lore of Fire has taken a bit of a back seat to Lore of Death.

IMHO Lore of Fire is still a viable lore to take. Especially if you can use it to blast away at a single target so your casting becomes easier and you can deal more wounds. Ultimately if you like the look and feel of Lore of Fire as you play your games then by all means take it. Try it out, you might find you like it's effects. If you find you don't then switch to Lore of Death or perhaps Lore of Life.

Sure dragon armour is cheap and easily taken but most of my opponents don't take it simply because everyone assumes you will and as such don't have many flaming attacks or the lore of fire.

Dragon princes will always have it, it was mainly them I was referring to. As far as cavalry go in 8th, Dragon princes came out very well as they don't suffer like the rest. High Init, ASF, more than 1 rider attack. They counter all the new problems of cav in 8th.

Even if I completely ignore the uptrend in HE armies, I still wouldn't pick fire for a tournie.

No I would definately NOT pick Lore of Fire for a tourney. In fact it's very difficult in a tournament environment to choose anything besides Lore of Life or Lore of Death except perhaps Lore of Metal. But for friendly games I think Lore of Fire might make a nice change.

In a tourney environment, I'd only take Lore of Light or Lore of Fire. Lore of Life is good, but really requires you to take several multi-wound models to truly benefit from its special ability. Light does everything, and straight blows up undead & daemons. Fire only does one thing well, but it does so spectacularly. How you use fire effectively is just by picking on one or two units a turn, and doing massive damage to them. Even against armies with fire defense, like High Elves, not every unit will have fire resistance, just pick on the units with no defense(ie swordmasters). A free D6, plus a free D3, plus 4 for casting value is on average a 9.5 before adding any power dice, and the lore of fire casting costs are very low to start with.

I wouldn't take LoLight to a tournemant, especially if there are daemons there. No daemon army worth it's salt will leave home without the Greast Standard of Sundering, which laughs as you declare that you've taken the Lore of Light on your Slann. "What Lore has your Slann got?" "Light, prepare to be crushed daemon!" "Yeah... about that... you're now at -2 to cast all spells from the Lore of light, and you're miscasting on double 1s, 2s and 3s as well as the regular 6s when casting any Lore of Light spell, please enjoy your game whilst I laugh at your Slann's uselessness."
