If you run a army without a Slann, but you want Heavy Magic defence - what would you guys use.

I was thinking lvl 2 Skink Priest + Engine of the gods + Diadem of Power.

Do I need more defence than that ? I just want to help defend against powrfull spells so that my Saurus can get into battle. I was thinking of combining it with Shield of the Mirror Pool on my other Hero to make sure I have adequate defence. What would you guys do ?

Usually if you want no magic just a bit of defence to weather the worst they throw at you while you reach combat, all you need is one or two cheap level 1 scroll cadies. A scroll or two are pretty much essential to magic defence, they may be one use only but they can instantly stop that big critical spell your opponent wants to use to blast one of your units to pieces.

With lizards, I think an engine can work great as magic defence. Go level 2 so you get boosted to 3, take the diadem, and round off his points with a scroll, then you get a decent amount of DD and can throw out some damage from the steg or use it to ward your army. Plus it will be a big boost when it reaches combat, and by then you won't care if the priest is dead or not because most of your army should be in combat and your scroll used.

Also remember the best way to defend against magic is to stop it happening. Kill their wizards. A few prime wizard hunters can be a great investment since wizards are usually very soft. In my HE army I sometimes used to take a noble on an eagle who was designed to charge a unit, kill a wizard, lose from static combat res then run and rally later to do it again on another wizard. It worked very well most of the time.
